Garth Brooks turns Ford Field into a dive bar with 70,000 backup singers - MLive.com

DETROIT - Garth Brooks essentially turned Ford Field into a dive bar, delivering a high energy show as the 70,000 fans returned the favor. Sporting a Barry Sanders jersey the whole night, Brooks told the record concert crowd at the home of the Detroit Lions that he didn’t think they could keep the high energy pace up the whole concert. He was wrong.

Brooks stepped on his huge new 130 foot wide circle stage at around 8:30 p.m. He performed nearly 30 songs in his two hour set. The crowd was so into it early on, Brooks decided to change the setlist just a few songs in. “The next song on the setlist is a slow song. Screw that, we’re gonna skip over that right quick.”

In between most songs, Brooks was often out of breath from roaming all over the huge stage which featured views from every angle. Many fans were right on top of the stage around the entire circle creating a dive bar feel. Even fans far away felt like they were close because of the sheer size of the circular stage and four large LED screens overhead. No seat had restricted views of the singer and his band.

Brooks often paused to look into the massive sea of humanity in awe as the crowd cheered him loudly after singing each of his songs word for word. He looked like he was having a blast and he let the crowd know it. “We are psyched for this one. This is the first one of the year for us. We’re ready to get back to kicking some ass and raising some hell. It’s going to be a lot of fun." After another song he just looked at the crowd, smiled and said “I have the greatest gig on the planet."

Brooks had plenty of love to give for Detroit, not just with the music, but with his words. “Every tour there’s seven or eight cities that you go, if I can just get to that city. Thank God we just got to this one now. I love playing this place. For anybody who might have been to the Fox Theatre or the Joe the last couple of times, so sweet. This is the place.”

Brooks also let the Detroit crowd know that they really know their country music. “We talk about how Detroit never really gets recognized for how well Detroit knows its country music. And it doesn’t matter the age of the listener, you know all the stuff.”

And about that Barry Sanders jersey he wore the entire concert. Brooks, who went to Oklahoma State, the same college as Sanders, called him the best player in NFL history. “You guys got the greatest player in NFL history in my opinion in this jersey. I love this man. It’s an honor to wear this jersey tonight.” The crowd responded with chants of “Barry! Barry! Barry," like they did when he played at the Silverdome.

Brooks gave the fans a great night of music and just enough banter between songs to make a connection as if he was talking straight to each individual. He also recorded the final song from an upcoming live album at this concert. “This was never a single for us, but I have a feeling after tonight’s performance off the live album, this might be a really really sweet spot in here," as he performed “All-American Kid.”

After his encore, Brooks did what Brooks does and looked at people’s signs in the crowd and played one request after another. He just kept going and going, performing 11 more songs, including a cover of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man.”

We don’t know when Brooks will be back in the Motor City, but if he truly had as much fun as he looked like he was having on this night, it shouldn’t be long before this rodeo comes galloping back into town.
