Lewis Capaldi proved exactly why he was the biggest-selling British artist of 2019 at the 2020 Brit Awards on Tuesday (Feb. 18), delivering a soaring performance of his breakout hit "Someone You Loved."
Backed by just a piano, the 23-year-old superstar belted his ballad from a circular stage in the center of London's O2 arena, surrounded by red curtains that briefly switched to images of clouds after the song's bridge. Capaldi gave the performance his all, with passionate vocals that made the song's gut-wrenching breakup story hit even harder.
But after pouring his heart into the performance, Capaldi -- who hilariously refers to himself as the Scottish Beyoncé -- quickly reminded those watching of his hilarious demeanor when he's not singing. He flashed a thumbs-up as soon as he finished his final note, then shot finger guns up to the balcony before leaving the stage.
Capaldi's powerful performance was then capped off in even more fitting fashion, as he proceeded to win best new artist. Though it was his first Brit Award (he's nominated for four this year), Capaldi stayed true to his witty personality as he accepted the trophy, beer in hand: "Thank you very f---in' much, I'll see you later."
