The original cast recording of the Wisconsin-set opera “Voir Dire” is set to be released physically and digitially on Aug. 7.
Composer Matthew Peterson and librettist and writer Jason Zencka, who were St. Olaf College classmates, wrote the opera, a courtroom drama. Zencka drew on his experiences as a journalist in Stevens Point in the late 2000s and Peterson composed the music in 2008 and 2009. “Voir Dire” premiered in 2017 at the Fort Worth Opera. The Wall Street Journal called it “startlingly immediate and journalistic, as gripping as a great feature story.”
They recorded the album in 2018 at a Minnesota Public Radio studio with the original cast of five opera artists and an ensemble of nine Minnesota musicians, including Zeitgeist clarinetist Pat O’Keefe and percussionists Erik Barsness and Dave Hagedorn.
