Easy Tiger, the popular Austin bakery and beer garden, permanently closed its downtown Austin location. The 709 East Sixth Street address had already been temporarily closed since mid-March. The company’s other location at the Linc remains open, and its forthcoming South Lamar spot is still on track to open soon.
“It was a heart-wrenching decision,” a rep for Easy Tiger shared with Eater. “We, like the rest of Sixth Street, were struggling down there. COVID-19 hit that area and us especially hard. We had an opportunity to amicably rework the lease with our landlord, and we took it.”
This original location was known for its baked goods, great beer selection, and wonderful lower-level beer garden along Waller Creek that served as an oasis to the bustling downtown scene. Easy Tiger CEO Mike Stitt expressed that the company does plan to reopen somewhere in downtown Austin at some point, though.
Easy Tiger’s future South Lamar address, which took over the last remaining location of comfort food patio mini-chain Red’s Porch earlier this year, will feature, yes, a bakery and beer garden, emphasizing social distancing measures. There are plans to open with only outdoor seating at first, as Stitt told Austin Business Journal.
The East Sixth Street bakery and beer garden opened in 2012 with head doughpuncher and baker David Norman, when it was operating under the ELM Group, followed by one within Whole Foods in Cedar Park in 2017 (which also closed permanently earlier this year). The bakery broke off from ELM in early 2018, and then opened its Linc location later that December. There was also its downtown food hall location within ELM’s Fareground, which was open for a year from 2018 to 2019.
Currently, Easy Tiger’s Linc is open for drive-thru, curbside, delivery, and dine-in patio services. The company is also selling its bread in retail grocery stores and markets and shipping loaves across the country. It opened up a roaming bread truck as well. At the same time, the bakery is continuing its bread donation program to local food banks and pantries.
This shutter is just the latest of recently announced closures in the downtown Austin area: B.D. Riley’s, Daruma, Mugshots, Barracuda, Ni-Kome in downtown food hall Fareground, and Pink Avocado, among others.
The landlord of the East Sixth address, Susan Ogden, told the Austin Business Journal that there is already an interested buyer for the space.
