Local Eats: The Hot Dog Stand’s Original Red Sauce is a decades-old family recipe - mlive.com

GRAND BLANC, MI — It all started with Rhonda Moore’s grandfather, who did not like the taste of ketchup.

The Hot Dog Stand, 11338 Saginaw St. in Grand Blanc, offers a simple menu with hot dogs, popcorn, chips, drinks, including root beer floats and the Original Red Sauce, a nearly 90-year-old recipe.

“We are known for our original red sauce, it’s a homemade ketchup that comes on our regular hot dogs. It’s a family recipe,” said Owner Rhonda Moore. “My grandfather (Ellsworth Moore) opened the first A&W in Michigan in 1934. So he did not like regular ketchup, so my grandmother’s (Aileen Moore) recipe, we’ve used it on our hot dogs ever since.”

Moore has owned The Hot Dog Stand since 1998. Moore is a third generation business owner, following after her father and her grandfather, who owned several A&W restaurants.

“We try to keep it as authentic and nostalgic as possible, because people come here because they remember coming as a child to A&W,” said Moore.

Moore’s grandfather built the The Hot Dog Stand in 1964. She describes it as an “old-school A&W.”

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the business had a car hop service, with employees taking orders and delivering food straight to people’s car windows. Now, only the walk-up window service is available and all food is wrapped in paper products.

But the slight change has not stopped customers or their cravings for the food or the popular red sauce. A small line formed on Thursday, Sept. 3, as people ordered food. Others sat in their cars or at the outdoor setting as they enjoyed a meal.

Customers can purchase bottles of the red sauce at Treasure Baskets in Grand Blanc and Main Street Treasures in Flushing. The sauce has traveled as far as China, Moore said.

“One of the things that kept the doors open is so many people were appreciative that we were here,” Moore said.

The Hot Dog Stand is seasonal and typically opens in March and closes in October. The business will be closed on Sunday, Sept. 6, and Monday, Sept. 7.

The Hot Dog Stand is located at 11338 Saginaw St. in Grand Blanc, phone 810-695-7597. See their Facebook page here.
