Original Downtown Disney restaurant to close after 22 years - SFGATE

A longtime restaurant smack dab in the middle of Downtown Disney has announced the last day it will be serving sangria and calamari.

Catal Restaurant, and its adjacent outdoor Uva Bar, is scheduled to shut down April 14. The pair of eateries has been a fixture in the outdoor shopping mall just beyond the gates of Disneyland since Downtown Disney opened in 2001.

"We're celebrating an incredible, delightful, delicious 22 years — from now until our last day of service," the restaurant wrote on Instagram. "... Sip favorite cocktails from the last two decades as we toast to the laughs, the memories, and the meals.⁣ Come cheers with us one more time."

Catal is closing to make way for a major redevelopment of the Downtown Disney district. Some of the retailers, like an old AMC theater and the former location of Earl of Sandwich, already had their storefronts demolished in 2022. Along with a redesign into a more mid-century modern aesthetic, the mall is slated to get new tenants, including soup dumplings favorite Din Tai Fung. Replacing the spots once occupied by Catal and Uva bar are Paseo and Centrico, two Mexican restaurants from Michelin-starred chef Carlos Gaytan.

The renovation has been slow-moving. The demolished area is still an empty lot; other major construction projects at Disneyland, like the refresh of Toontown, have been delayed because of the unusually rainy winter.

Catal and the Uva Bar are owned by the Patina Group, which has a longstanding partnership with Disney Parks. They also run Napolini Pizzeria and Tortilla Jo's in Downtown Disney and Morimoto Asia, Maria & Enzo's, Via Napoli and Space 220, among others, in Walt Disney World.

If you were hoping for one last happy hour at Catal, you can try to make a reservation through OpenTable; it appears most of the prime slots have already filled up, though.
