Blue Bottle Coffee has closed its Jack London Square location.
NYSD G. / YelpBlue Bottle Coffee has shut down its original Oakland location at 300 Webster St. after 11 years, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently of one another).
“In cooperation with our landlord we have closed our Webster cafe," Blue Bottle CEO Karl Strovink said in a statement to SFGATE. "We appreciate our landlord allowing us to operate month to month until a successor tenant for the entire building was identified."
The third-wave coffee chain relocated its roasting operations from the Jack London Square facility to Sacramento back in 2019 in preparation for rent tripling when the lease was up. Its corporate offices, which were once headquartered at the Webster Street building, were moved to Old Oakland.
Blue Bottle has grown exponentially since it started at an Oakland farmers market in 2002. Nestle acquired ownership of the company back in 2017, and it now boasts an extensive network of nearly 100 cafes across the U.S., Japan and Korea.
The Webster Street Blue Bottle's last day of operation was Sunday.
"We are extremely grateful to our cafe regulars and the Jack London Square community who supported us at this location for so many years," continued Strovink's statement. "We encourage our former Webster guests to visit us at our Old Oakland cafe, located just a half a mile away."
