Why The Original Ghostbusters Are Only In Afterlife For One Scene - Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Despite being featured separately throughout the film, the original team of Ghostbusters from 1984 is only featured for one scene together in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. In essence, Afterlife is a film that serves to honor the legacy of the original two Ghostbusters movies, rather than being a direct sequel. As such, GhostbustersAfterlife puts its focus primarily on the new cast and next generation. However, the original busters still get their time to shine together near the film's end.

Throughout Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the members of the first team each get their individual spotlights. The late Harold Ramis gets the most screentime with Egon Spengler being recreated digitally as a ghost, helping his family finish the job he and his team started 30 years prior. Dan Aykroyd's Ray Stantz is featured when Spengler's granddaughter Pheobe calls his occult bookshop, wanting to learn more about why the original Ghostbusters broke up. Bill Murray's Peter Venkman and Ernie Husdon's Winston Zeddemore are also featured in Afterlife's two post-credits scenes with Venkman spending time with Sigourney Weaver's Dana while Winston is seen talking with Annite Potts' Janine Melnitz about potentially restoring the Ghostbusters' old firehouse.

That being said, the old team does eventually reunite in the final confrontation against Gozer, suiting up with their proton packs and crossing their streams as they help Egon Spengler's family in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and their friends defeat the evil god for good. It's rather satisfying, but the reunion only works so well because it's only a single scene at the film's end. Anything more would have distracted from the new cast and the primary focus of the plot which is less about the original Ghostbusters themselves and more about what they left behind which has been embraced by others looking to do their own ghostbusting. It's a legacy sequel in the truest sense of it, with the original Ghostbusters having established their legacy and showing up just long enough to pass the torch to the next generation.

Egon Spengler's family is much more important for Ghostbusters: Afterlife's overall plot than the original Ghostbusters cast as it sees them discovering who Egon was and the unfulfilled mission he left behind for them to finish in his memory. Rather than being a direct sequel, Afterlife is all about legacy seeing these new characters take up the mantle, particularly Egon's granddaughter, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), who sees much of herself in her grandfather. Furthermore, Phoebe's brother Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and their friends Podcast (Logan Kim) and Lucky (Celeste O'Connor) all shine as they come together to form a brand new team to fight Ghostbusters: Afterlife's Gozer the Gozerian.

While the movie certainly has its criticisms, it's a blueprint for how a legacy sequel should be handled in terms of original characters vs. new ones. The inclusion of the original Ghostbusters team is such a satisfying payoff at the film's end because they only have the one scene. Furthermore, while that single scene is used to great effect as they come together to help the new team win the day (including the Egon's ghost), it doesn't overshadow the efforts of the newcomers in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
