ACROSS AMERICA — A recent anniversary celebration in Newark, New Jersey, was what could be called pure gold spun from at least 7,500 years of pure, deeply committed, they'll-stand-by-each-other-until-death-doth-part-them love.

Collectively, that's how many hours the 150 couples celebrating their golden anniversaries have been married. Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the archbishop of Newark, officiated at a ceremony honoring them at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.

During the ceremony, some couples shared the secret to long and lasting love, including the Wischusens, Bob, 74, and Anne, 73.

According to Anne, it's essential to do things together, but it's also important to have other interests you can call your own. For example, Anne gardens and Bob plays golf and is a faithful participant in the activities of their nine grandchildren, the diocese said.

"I never really worried about our relationship deteriorating," Bob Wischusen said. "I just knew that together we could deal with anything, so we're very, very lucky. And I tell my children that too – how lucky we are." » By Eric Kiefer for Newark Patch

A grandmother in Long Branch, New Jersey, is on a mission. Joanne O'Connell, 66, wants to find the group of teens who went out of their way to be nice to her grandson after they saw another child tell him to "go away," likely not knowing he has autism and developmental delays. "They were just such nice kids," O'Connell said. "I just want to find them and thank their parents." » By Carly Baldwin for Long Branch-Eatontown Patch

Hello, World! This Baby Wouldn't Wait.

Shamyrah Tuzo's contractions began on a Sunday morning. She has two other children and figured she had plenty of time to get to the hospital. Shen went to a wedding as planned. When she got home, the contractions were closer together, so she told her husband it was time to head to the hospital. Her plan had been to go through labor at home to limit the time she spent in the hospital. She ran a tub of water and prepared for a relaxing soak. When she tried to get out of the tub, she couldn't stand up. Her husband dialed 911. The police arrived. Shai Sarenah Tuzo was not waiting. The tub her mother was relaxing in suddenly became a birthing tub. » By Alexis Tarrazi for Bridgewater Patch

It's Not Always That Easy

Motherhood doesn't happen as easily for all mothers. While fertility issues are not uncommon, the discussion around it is. Donna Shaw of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, is breaking that stigma in her book "Poppin' Past Forty." Shaw, who had her daughter, Paloma, just shy of her 44th birthday, was inspired to write the book when Paloma turned 1. "Why aren't people talking about this and raising awareness?" she told Patch. "You will have hiccups but still have success." » By Alexis Tarrazi for Basking Ridge Patch

Keys To The City

When a young child in her class started choking on a water bottle cap, third grade teacher JaNiece Jenkins didn't hesitate. And that's why her "heroic" actions have earned the East Orange (New Jersey) Community Charter School teacher a key to the city, presented at a ceremony earlier this week. Jenkins accepted it with humility. "All I was doing was saving my student's life … just doing my job," she said. » By Eric Kiefer for West Orange Patch

What A Predicament

Imagine the surprise of a raccoon coming through your roof. That's what happened at a home in California's Santa Cruz Mountains. The mother raccoon was stuck face-first through the roof of the home. A representative of Wildlife Emergency Services talked the homeowner through pushing the raccoon on through the hole, so she wouldn't suffocate. The story has a happy ending. » By Sara Schaefer for Santa Cruz Patch
