CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “Hamilton” is mesmerizing experience: the story of one of America’s founding fathers transformed into an inspiring, yet timely tale of an immigrant’s pursuit of the American dream set to a pulsing score fueled by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s sick rhymes.
The musical became a phenomenon on Broadway in 2015, playing to constant sold-out crowds and winning 11 Tony awards. The show’s immediate success was a testament to the young, scrappy and hungry company that made up the original cast.
But unless you had deep pockets or were incredibly lucky, you probably weren’t in the room where those actors made it happen on a nightly basis.
That changes Friday when the film of the original stage production of “Hamilton” premieres on Disney+.

“This was basically a three-day film shoot with the best rehearsed cast in the history of the movies because we had all been doing the show for a year at this point,” Miranda recently told “Good Morning America.”
Since shooting the movie in the Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016 and subsequently leaving the show, the principal cast members haven’t thrown away their shots and continue to make their marks in the entertainment industry.
Here’s a look at what they’ve done and what they’re up to now.
Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton
Miranda left the show he created in July 2016 and went to work for Disney, writing songs for “Moana” and starring in “Mary Poppins Returns.” He also played an exaggerated version of himself in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and has become a political activist for his native Puerto Rico. Coming up, Miranda will appear in the film adaptation of his first Broadway musical “In The Heights,” which was originally scheduled to hit theaters this summer, but now arrives July 18, 2021. He’s also written original music for Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” and recently started working on a new, mysterious animated musical for the studio.
Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr
The actor, who you might remember from the NBC musical series “Smash,” actually beat Miranda in the race for Best Leading Actor in a Musical at the 2016 Tonys. Since then, he’s released two jazz albums and appeared in films like “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Harriet.” Odom can currently be seen alongside Freida Pinto in the post-apocalyptic romance “Only,” now available to stream.
Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson
After Diggs won the Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, he went to appear in movies like “Wonder,” “Velvet Buzzsaw” and “Blindspotting,” which he also wrote. On TV, Diggs had recurring roles on “The Get Down,” “black-ish” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Mayor.” He currently is the main star of TNT’s “Snowpiercer” and will play Sebastian in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid.”
Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler
Goldsberry was already an accomplished Broadway and soap opera actress when she joined “Hamilton,” for which she won the Tony for Best Featured Actress. You may have seen her recently as a regular on Netflix’s “Altered Carbon” and in guest spots on “Evil” on CBS and NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.”
Christopher Jackson as George Washington
Jackson worked with Miranda before and after “Hamilton” -- before on “In the Heights” and after on “Moana.” For the last four seasons, he’s played Chunk Palmer on the CBS legal drama “Bull.” The network recently renewed the series for a fifth season.
Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton
Miranda’s on-stage wife stuck to her Broadway roots after leaving “Hamilton,” landing the title role in a musical based on the French film “Amelie” and one of the leads in “The Parisian Woman” opposite Uma Thurman and Josh Lucas. Soo can be seen this summer in “The Broken Hearts Gallery,” a romantic comedy from executive producer Selena Gomez coming to theaters July 17.
Jonathan Groff as King George
Before he ever performed his show-stopping rendition of“You’ll Be Back,” you (or your kids) likely already knew Groff from his recurring role as Jesse St. James on “Glee” and as the voice of Kristoff in Disney’s “Frozen.” You can see him these days as the lead in the Netflix crime thriller “Mindhunter.”
Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison
Onaodowan went from working for one creative genius in Miranda to another-- prolific TV drama producer Shonda Rhimes. Since 2018, he’s played firefighter Dean Miller in “Station 19″ on ABC.
Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton
Ramos’ performance will probably leave you in tears, which may sent you Googling to find out more about him. The actor spent two seasons on Spike Lee’s Netflix series “She’s Got To Have It” and played Lady Gaga character’s best friend in “A Star Is Born.” He reunites with Miranda in the movie adaptation of “In The Heights,” coming to theaters next summer.
... and Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy
Though she played the least memorable Schuyler sister, we could never forget Cephas Jones as Peggy. She and her on-stage sisters delivered a powerful performance of “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl LI in 2017. In March of this year, Cephas Jones released her debut EP “Blue Bird.” The actress recently appeared in “The Photograph” with Issa Rae and Lakeith Lee Stanfield and has a role in Liam Neeson’s upcoming action movie “Honest Thief.”
