It’s not TV, it’s a virtual reunion.
The cast of “The Sopranos” is gathering remotely Friday for an online reunion/charity benefit that will feature a new sketch from series creator David Chase and writer Terence Winter.
Have you been rewatching and bingeing “The Sopranos” during the pandemic? Eager for any morsel of related material?
Here are the details on who’s going to be at the reunion and how to tune in.
“The Sopranos” aired for six seasons on HBO, starting in 1999, and bowed with an infamous cut to black in 2007 (for the anniversary of the finale in June, we asked some cast members what it was like to watch the finale).
Series creator David Chase will be at the virtual reunion, where cast members will be performing the new Chase-Winter sketch. And this isn’t the first cast reunion. Just last year, Chase and series actors gathered to mark the 20th anniversary of the show’s premiere.
Here’s the full lineup so far: Edie Falco (Carmela), Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Meadow), Robert Iler (A.J.), Lorraine Bracco (Dr. Melfi), Michael Imperioli (Christopher), Drea de Matteo (Adriana), Steve Schirripa (Bobby “Bacala” Baccalieri), Steve Buscemi (Tony Blundetto), Vincent Pastore (Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero), Steven Van Zandt (Silvio Dante), Maureen Van Zandt (Gabriella Dante), writer Terence Winter and writer and director Tim Van Patten.
James Gandolfini, who won three Emmys for his iconic performance at Tony Soprano, died in 2013.
As we know, no one ever really stopped watching “The Sopranos.” If anything, long after the cut to black in 2007, the HBO series has continued to be discovered by new and younger viewers on streaming.
Last year saw the debut of SopranosCon, a veritable festival of show lore in the Meadowlands, with appearances from many “Sopranos” veterans. This year, Imperioli, Schirripa, De Matteo, Sigler and Iler have all revisited the episodes of the show and what it was like on set through their respective podcasts, “Talking Sopranos,” “Made Women” and “Pajama Pants.”
The “Sopranos” event follows in the footsteps of many TV and film reunions during the pandemic — from “The Nanny,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Happy Days,” “Seinfeld,” “Veep” and “The West Wing” to “Superbad,” “The Princess Bride” and “The Goonies.”
The “Sopranos” reunion will air live over two hours starting at 7 p.m. ET/ 4 p.m. PT Friday, Dec. 18. It is a fundraiser for Friends of Firefighters, a charity organized after 9/11 to help FDNY firefighters and their families.
To make a donation or watch the reunion Friday night, go to Tiltify; tiltify.com/+sopranos/reunion.
There will also be a Q&A portion. Viewers can leave a question for the cast when they make a donation.
The event has so far raised $7,211 of its $100,000 goal. Another Tiltify event — a script reading with the cast of “The Goonies” — raised $141,570 for No Kid Hungry.
Though James Gandolfini died in 2013, his son, Michael Gandolfini, is stepping into Tony Soprano’s shoes in “The Many Saints of Newark,” the upcoming “Sopranos” prequel movie.
The film will premiere simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max March 12, 2021 (it was originally supposed to hit theaters in September, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the release back). The story will depict the North Jersey Mafia boss’ childhood and the 1967 Newark riots, with Michael Gandolfini, 21, playing a young Tony.
Living up to its title, “The Many Saints of Newark” was filmed in local spots including Newark, Bloomfield and Paterson — including Holsten’s, the Bloomfield ice cream parlor where Tony and his family were last seen in 2007.
Newark streets were transformed to look like the 1960s, and background actors playing Newark residents, police, National Guardsmen and state troopers descended on the city in the spring of 2019. The movie also filmed in various boroughs of New York City.
Alessandro Nivola (“Disobedience”) plays Dickie Moltisanti, father to Christopher Moltisanti and mentor to young Tony (Moltisanti translates from Italian to the film’s title, “Many Saints”); Jon Bernthal (“The Punisher”) plays Tony Soprano’s father, “Johnny Boy” Soprano; New Jersey’s own Vera Farmiga (“The Conjuring”) plays Tony’s mother, Livia Soprano; Corey Stoll (“First Man”) plays a young Uncle Junior and Billy Magnussen (“Aladdin”) plays a young Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri.
Other cast members include Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. (“Hamilton”), Union’s Ray Liotta and Italian actress Michela De Rossi.
