After facing potential closure this year, the Station House Cafe in Point Reyes Station is set to relocate to the spot where it first opened 56 years ago.

The West Marin fixture — a restaurant, bar and live music venue — plans to move to the corner of Third and Main streets in Point Reyes Station in mid-2021, according to owner Sheryl Cahill.

The business has been searching for a new home after lease renewal negotiations at its current location on Highway 1 fell through earlier this year.

“I had been talking to a few different properties about the potential but none of them were in downtown Point Reyes and none of them was the original location of the Station House Cafe,” Cahill said. “It was a no-brainer.”

Station House Cafe first opened at Third and Main streets in June 1964 as the Station House Restaurant. At the time it was owned by the Rehbein family until passing to Jack Mason from 1966-1971, according to local historian Dewey Livingston. Pat Healy took ownership thereafter and sold it to Cahill in 2005.

Cahill started working at the cafe in 1990, a year after it moved a block away to its current location. This will be the first time she will work at the original site.

The cafe is able to occupy the space at its original location following the closure of the Italian restaurant Osteria Stellina in August. After 12 years in business, the eatery was closed due to the pandemic and other challenges, according to a restaurant posting.

Cahill said the Third and Marin street property owners, the Jeannine and Peter Strober Trust, knew she had been looking for a new location and contacted her once the building was available.

“The property owner is amazingly supportive and is doing a lot of the fundamental work to improve the facility for us,” Cahill said. “And I will be responsible for all of the things that we need to do to make it the Station House Cafe.”

Longtime patrons of the Station House Cafe will notice some changes that will come along with the new location.

“We’ll still be the Station House Cafe but we’ll take some of our traditions with us and have some new surprises as well,” Cahill said. “When you move into a new place you have new opportunities.”

The new location does not have an outdoor garden area, though Cahill said they will be offering outdoor seating should coronavirus restrictions still be in place at the time of reopening.

In the meantime, supporters have created a fundraising campaign to help the restaurant pay for costs that will be incurred from the move, such as permitting fees, equipment and renovations.
