New Gods: How the Original Darkseid Saga Ended | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Released as the fourth entry in the Pre-Crisis DC Graphic Novel series, The Hunger Dogs by Jack Kirby was quietly meant to be the ending of the Fourth World Saga by the man who created it. But instead of ending on an expected titanic battle or a massive loss of life, it offers a surprisingly quiet and powerful ending instead.

As chaos spreads across the world, Darkseid is approached with Micro-Mark Technology, tools of war powerful enough to bring about the fall of New Genesis. After initially doubting the potential of these weapons, Darkseid uses a batch of Boom Tubes to bring the Micro-Mark to New Genesis -- causing untold damage to the world. It becomes so drastic that Highfather is forced to create a new satellite base of operations for the New Gods, allowing them to escape the chaos. Darkseid's plans rely on the New Gods responding by going on the offensive, but the New Gods restrain themselves, save for Orion, who returns to Apokolips.

Killing Esak (the creator of the Micro-Mark technology), Orion ends up leading the Hunger Dogs in an open revolt against Darkseid. Along the way, he finally confesses his feelings for Bekka (a native of Apokolips) andworks with her father, Himon. Together they're able to rescue his long-lost mother Tigra from Darkseid's hold. But the inherent danger of the Micro-Mark Technology sews discord even further into Apokolips -- especially after Darkseid and his ruling class witness the powerful device destroy the evacuated New Genesis. As the remains of New Genesis fall to Apokolips and threaten to set off the Micro-Mark Technology, Darkseid is able to kill Himon but fails to prevent Orion, Bekka and Tigra's escape from Apokolips.

As they depart, Orion calls after his father, openly insulting him and reminding him that in his efforts to control everything, he's found himself lord of a dead planet. The bombs on Apokolips ignite but don't fully destroy the world. Darkseid, surviving the chaos, is able to prepare to rebuild his empire while the New Gods are led to an idyllic new home by Metron. But Orion's final words hang over him. "There's nothing worth tormenting on Apokilips now, except your own thirsty ego -- and when that dries up, the cosmos will remain unmoved."

According to the Jack Kirby Collector, Kirby's original intent for the New Gods almost came to pass in 1984 when the original eleven issues of The New Gods were reprinted. Kirby conceived of a final entry in the story which would have ended with Darkseid and Orion both dying as the conclusion of the saga. But the editorial staff of DC didn't want to kill off an entire line of characters, especially as Darkseid's importance and popularity grew with time. Instead, Kirby worked on two other stories -- "On The Road to Armageddon" and "Even Gods Must Die," which effectively led to the events of The Hunger Dogs. While The Hunger Dogs doesn't end in a titanic battle between the powerful father and son, it actually subverts expectations in a subtly brilliant way.

Darkseid doesn't get the dignity of a final battle or the Shakespearan level tragedy of being killed by his son. Instead, everyone in his life abandoned him. The world he took dominion of has fallen apart. He is now the king of nothing but rubble. Even the ruins of his world have become all but cosmic dust. Darkseid ends the Fourth World Saga, left behind by his enemies and diminished in the eyes of all that would care to look for him. For all his ambition and power, Darkseid is ultimately just another speck in the galaxy. His final appearance in Kirby's New Gods Saga is a speck against the ruins of Apokolips, reminding readers just how small Darkseid really is.
