ANN ARBOR, MI -- Nick Panos takes pride in his “from-scratch kitchen.”
“We crack our own eggs,” said Panos, owner of Nick’s Original House of Pancakes in Ann Arbor. “We make our own batter.”
The batter recipe, a close-kept secret, was created by his aunt, also a local restaurant owner.
Nick’s Original House of Pancakes, 3030 Lohr Circle, celebrates its 13th anniversary in December, Panos said. The restaurant focuses on breakfast food, serving up omelets, biscuits and gravy and, of course, pancakes.
“Obviously, pancakes are the highlight,” Panos said.
Panos serves the classics — including chocolate chip, banana and strawberry pancakes — as well as potato pancakes, multigrain pancakes and “fruit explosion” pancakes, which feature blackberries, blueberries and strawberries.
Nick’s Original House of Pancakes also serves seasonal pancakes, with summer’s lemongrass blueberry turning into pumpkin pancakes with the arrival of fall.
“The seasonal ones are always hot,” Panos said.
Serving locally-sourced food is important to Panos. The burgers on his lunch menu use meat from Knight’s Market.
“We support local because we are local,” Panos said.
Nick’s Original House of Pancakes is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dine-in, carryout and delivery are all available.
