New York Jets rookie Zach Wilson sure looks excited about their upcoming matchup with Bill Belichick and his New England Patriots. In face, the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft is embracing the challenge of facing one of the most decorated franchises in league history.
Ahead of the Jets-Patriots Week 2 showdown on Sunday, Wilson shared how “super cool” it is to be playing against a team and a coach that he grew up watching. While it’s no longer the same team after the departure of Tom Brady in 2020, the 22-year-old signal-caller is still hyped to face Belichick and try to outwit him with everything he got.
“You think the New England Patriots your whole life and my whole life, how many Super Bowls they’ve won, and how many I’ve seen them in. Obviously, the team is a little bit different now without Tom there. But Bill Belichick is still there, and that dude is one of the best coaches around. The scheme and the way he gets those guys to play hard and the rules he gives them, it’s tough, he does a good job. So it’s going to be a good challenge for us,” Wilson said of the Patriots, per the Brian Costello of the New York Post.
Both the Jets and Patriots head to the Sunday game coming off tough losses which put them both at 0-1. According to The Post, New England has never opened a season 0-2 since 2001, so that should be an extra motivation for them.
However, Zach Wilson and the Jets are certainly as hungry. Plus, as he faces a fellow rookie quarterback in Mac Jones, Wilson should be more than determined to show what made him one of the best quarterbacks in his class.
