What may be New Jersey’s greatest strip mall for foodies just lost one of its top draws.
Jersey Shore BBQ, the popular barbecue restaurant, announced Saturday night it will soon close its original Belmar location after 11 years of business.
“We opened in Belmar in 2010 and have endured this pandemic, lived and cried with y’all during and after (Superstorm) Sandy, and met some of the finest and most loyal customers that any small business could ask for,” owners Doug and Dana Walsh wrote on Instagram.
The Belmar location closes for good Sunday. The chain’s two subsequent locations, in East Brunswick and Point Pleasant Beach, will remain open.
Jersey Shore BBQ regularly appears on NJ.com’s statewide best barbecue lists, and food writer Pete Genovese has further noted JSBBQ is part of New Jersey’s best strip mall for dining, as the row also includes 10th Avenue Burrito Co., Simply Southern and Kotta Sushi.
Here’s Genovese’s entry on JSBBQ from our latest barbecue ranking, in May, where the chain was placed 11th:
“Doug Walsh, owner of Jersey Shore BBQ, came by barbecue the roundabout way: he was doing tech consultant work in Texas when he ‘fell in love with the food — brisket, ribs, intense smoking.’ Back in Jersey, he started doing barbecue cookouts in his backyard. That led to catering, which led to the Belmar storefront. A second Jersey Shore BBQ location opened in 2017 in East Brunswick. I love the dry-rubbed ribs here. Super sides: the ranch beans and hand-cut fries. Don’t sleep on the wings, pleasingly plump, with their standout sauces. They made my N.J’s best wings list. The last time I stopped, for my story on the state’s best strip mall for food, Walsh showed me a giant juicy hunk of corned beef. I just about fainted.”
