There is good news and very surprising news about Fred’s Texas Café that might knock you off your feet.

Fred’s is closing its original location on Currie Street on Dec. 31.
If that griddle could talk.
On the surface, this is worse than losing Facebook for most of a day, but there is good news: Those righteous Fred’s burgers are only moving — to a bigger, more expansive location at 7101 Camp Bowie West Blvd., the famed Fort Worth food joint announced Thursday.
Most recently on the site of the new location was another restaurant, Buffalo West. Fred's is targeting a spring 2022 opening.
"The decision to move Fred’s is a hard one, but the right one if we want to keep making great food for great people,” Quincy Wallace, co-owner and operating partner, said in a statement. “I’m gonna miss going into that building every day like a lot of our loyal regulars.”
JD and Gari Chandler purchased the Currie Street location in 1978. The building has been in that location for almost 50 years, previously as Ken's. During the restaurant's four decades of operation, the business has stayed family owned and local through the partnership of long-time friends and co-owners Terry Chandler — JD and Gari's son — and Wallace.
"What JD and Gari created is more than a building; it is a family of people who come in for a great meal surrounded by their neighbors and community,” Wallace said. “Fred’s has that foundation as part of its legacy.”
The restaurant also announced that it will host a series of special programming, weekly menu additions, and events throughout November and December to honor its history on Currie Street.
The new location will include an extended patio, more indoor dining space, event stage, and a bigger parking lot and street parking access. Management also plans a return of seasonal and specialty menu items of the past.
