At the Original Hot Dog Factory, you can order your hot dog anyway you want, from grilled pineapple and Jamaican jerk seasoning to a classic with ketchup and mustard.
The franchise opened earlier this week at 317 Market St in Harrisburg, and so far owners Latoya Williams and Hoson Greene said the response has been overwhelming. A grand opening will be held April 9.
“We turned the lights on and got swamped,” Williams said, adding customers are crowding into the former Flamingo Grille.
The Atlanta, Georgia-based chain operates more than 25 restaurants in a handful of states including locations in Philadelphia. Founded by Dennis McKinley, Original Hot Dog dates back to 2010 but was rebranded and revamped in 2015.
Williams and Greene, both Harrisburg residents, said they were sold on the hot dog concept. They spent several days training at one of the chain’s locations in New Jersey.
“Who doesn’t like hot dogs?” Williams said. “We’ve got turkey dogs, Beyond meat dogs, sausage and vegan hot dogs.”
Williams, a surgical technician, said she views restaurant ownership as a chance for growth: “Let me do something for me.” Greene is one of the owners of Heads Up barbershop in Harrisburg.
Together, the two said they want to help others by providing jobs and potential for management positions within the restaurant.
At the heart of the menu are grilled 100% Angus beef hot dogs, but customers can select from other dogs including Polish sausage, bratwurst and bacon-wrapped dogs. Order straight-up dogs or a combination meal with choice of fries and a drink.
The fun starts with 25 pre-set topped dogs such as a Memphis Dog with a bacon wrapped dog topped with cheese and barbecue sauce to a Fire Dog with Arizona heat hot sauce, jalapeño peppers and sport peppers and a Surf & Turf with jumbo lump crab.
Widgets include french fries, onion rings, sweet potato fries, baked beans and cole slaw. They also carry wings, corn dog nuggets and desserts including milkshakes, deep-fried Oreos and Twinkies and funnel cake sticks.
The restaurant is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Closed Sunday. Phone is 717-695-6429.
