John Iasparro got witty when discussing fellow original Friends of Staten Island Football (FSIF) committee member Bobby McGhie.
“The thing with Bobby was, he didn’t know how to say or spell a two-letter word,’' said a laughing Iasparro when discussing his friend after Football Sunday’s Award ceremony outside the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame room at the CYO-MIV Center in Pleasant Plains on Sunday. “He wouldn’t say ‘no’ to anything, especially when it came to high school football on Staten Island.
“That’s just the kind of guy he is,’' added FSIF’s spokesman. “It was always about what was best for the kids playing football.
“He just never said no.’'
The 66-year-old McGhie was in attendance on Sunday and drew a warm round of applause on several occasions from those in attendance to honor the annual Andy Barberi, Dennis Barrett, Al Fabbri and Sal Somma Award winners. In fact, in addition to Iasparro, fellow FSIF members Bill D’Ambrosio and Jim McKeon, as well as Monsignor Farrell athletic director Tony Garofalo, each made a reference to McGhie during the ceremony.
And why not?
McGhie, who played football, basketball and baseball at Curtis during his high school days, is a football lifer. Not only did he coach at his alma mater, but he was also a part of Bill Sullivan’s coaching staff when the latter started Moore Catholic’s football program at the start of the century.
McGhie also offered support to the NYPD football team, as well as the annual Fugazzi Bowl.
As an original member of Friends of Staten Island Football, one of his many duties included organizing ambulance scheduling for high school football games being played on the Island. Prior to his involvement with FSIF, McGhie was a member of the Advance/SILIve.com advisory board in selecting All Stars.
“For many years, one way or another, Bobby was involved in the Island’s high school football community,’' said Iasparro, who was often alongside McGhie when he volunteered. “We wanted to make sure his many contributions through the years are acknowledged and we thought there couldn’t be a better place than during our award ceremony this year.
“We just want to say thank you to him‚’’ concluded Iasparro. “The kids greatly benefitted from his contributions and saying thank you is the least we can do for a good guy.’'
