1The Handmaid's Tale
One of Hulu's earliest ventures into prestige television, this adaptation of Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel won eight Emmys in its first season and was one of the most-talked about shows of 2017. Anchored by Elizabeth Moss's powerhouse performance, the show felt grimly relevant alongside the political and social upheaval seen in recent years. With a fourth season on the horizon, it's a good time to catch up.
This provocative political drama about the battle over the Equal Rights Amendment is another one of the platform's prestige offerings. Though it's clear creative licenses were taken with the lives of the real people involved— like feminist Gloria Steinem (Rose Bryne) and infamous reactionary Phyllis Schlafly (Cate Blanchett)— the series is still a gripping portrayal of a not-so-distant time in American history.
Though it departs significantly from the book by Celeste Ng, this is one of the most-talked about shows of the spring. Set in Shaker Heights, Ohio during the late 1990s, it features killer performances by Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington as mothers from different worlds whose lives collide in shocking, violent ways.
