High Fidelity
This 2020 reimagining of the Nick Hornby novel stars Zoe Kravitz in the role popularized by John Cusack in the 2000 romcom of the same name. Instead of playing a lovelorn record shop owner in Chicago, like the movie, Kravitz plays a record shop owner in Crown Heights, Brooklyn who tries to figure out why her past relationships failed. Hulu modernized some aspects of the story, but it is just as charming as the movie you know and love. So far, there’s just the 10 episodes of season 1 to watch, but Hulu hasn’t said no to a second season yet.

The Handmaid’s Tale
The winner of multiple Emmys and Golden Globe awards, this adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian science fiction novel is one of the original series that put Hulu on the map. Now with three seasons, the show has moved beyond the book’s plot but still centers around life in the former United States after fertility rates are decimated and women capable of giving birth are held as slaves. Elisabeth Moss stars as one of these “Handmaids,” as they’re called, who is assigned to the home of one of the regime’s commanders. A fourth season has been ordered, but production was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Little Fires Everywhere
Based on the 2017 Celeste Ng novel and released as an eight-part miniseries in March 2020, Little Fires Everywhere is about two moms—Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon) and Mia Warren (Kerry Washington)—from different backgrounds raising their children in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The fires in the title refers to the burning of the Richardson’s home that happens at the very beginning of the series, but the show is more about motherhood, race, and mistrust than a strict whodunit. Not surprisingly, it’s earned comparisons to Big Little Lies, HBO’s award-winning drama that also stars Witherspoon and hits on somewhat similar topics.

Pen15
Created by Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, PEN15 is about two best friends navigating the 7th grade in the year 2000. This comedy is just as cringy as it is funny, especially because Erskine and Konkle—who were both born in 1987—play fictionalized versions of their middle school selves opposite actual 13 year olds. The show tackles issues of insecurity, peer pressure, and puberty all just as awkwardly as you remember it.

Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Runaways has three seasons on Hulu which aired between 2017 and 2019, which will likely be all we get as Marvel begins to consolidate its shows by only launching new series through Disney+.

Shrill
Saturday Night Live’s Aidy Bryant stars in this Hulu original series about a young woman attempting to launch her career as a journalist, while trying to find love and maintain healthy relationships with her friends and parents. The one thing she is not trying to do is change her body, despite what the rest of the world wants her to think. Shot on location in Portland, Oregon, the show has received rave reviews for its depiction of self love and acceptance. It aired its second season in January 2020 and Hulu has already renewed it for a third season.

Veronica Mars
Launched in 2004, this drama starring Kristen Bell as a teen private investigator in the fictional seaside town of Neptune, California ended up being cut short after only three seasons. Thanks to a dedicated fan base, the show’s creator was able to bring the beloved show back as a feature film in 2014. Hulu picked the show up for a fourth and final season in 2019. Set more than a decade after the original series wrapped, the show brings back favorite characters like Logan, Wallace, and Weevil as Veronica and her dad Keith try solve the mystery who is responsible for the bombings terrorizing their town.

Harlots
With three seasons under its belt, Harlots is one of Hulu’s most critically acclaimed original shows even though it receives a fraction of the buzz of hyped up series like The Handmaid’s Tale. But all the more reason to pay attention to this whip smart period drama set in the brothels of 18th century London. The plot centers around two rival madams trying to protect their lucrative businesses. It’s lurid and campy, but also feminist and empowering.

The Act
Patricia Arquette won both a best supporting actress Emmy and a Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Dee Dee Blanchard in Hulu’s true crime drama The Act. After discovering this lie, Gypsy asks her boyfriend to kill her mom, a crime for which the real Gypsy is still serving a prison sentence today.

Difficult People
This dark comedy starring Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner ran for three seasons on Hulu starting in 2015. The pair plays essentially what are fictionalized versions of themselves: Two comedians in New York who seem to hate everyone but each other. The series earned comparisons to Seinfeld during its run because of how self-absorbed, unlikable, but ultimately hilarious the main characters are.

Castle Rock
Instead of being based on one Stephen King novel, Castle Rock—named after the town in Maine where it is set—brings together themes and elements across King’s canon as well as featuring actors who have starred in other adaptations of his work. You’ll recognize Sissy Spacek from Carrie and Bill Skarsgard from It, though they play new characters here. So far there are two seasons streaming on Hulu and the series is pending renewal for a third.
