The Amenity Authority Commission will be facing a major decision about the fate of the original executive golf course in The Villages.
The Silver Lake Executive Golf Course dates back to 1987 and is located on the Historic Side of The Villages.
During an extensive budget review Wednesday at Savannah Center, the AAC was presented with options about the course, which is need of a major renovation.
“Due to the age of the course, Silver Lake has passed its useful life expectancy and requires comprehensive renovation and improvements for the long term enjoyment of our residents and maintenance requirements of the course,” said Mitch Leininger, director of Executive Golf Maintenance.
He presented two starkly different options:
• Transition to a new concept – an 18-hole Pitch and Putt and nine-hole Putt and Play experience like the one in the south portion of The Villages. This would cost $1.087 million.
• Renovate the existing course with new tees, new greens and design modifications including re- grassing. The cost would be about $500,000.
“They are different experiences completely,” said AAC Chair Ann Forrester.
She said she wanted some time to absorb the ideas and hear feedback from residents.
AAC member Carl Bell said the nine-hole golf course should remain.
“That’s what the residents bought into,” he said.
However, AAC member Don Deakin said the ideas were, “Exciting.”
