TEXAS — The last time we saw Joseph Ossai on the field, it was the ultimate showcase of what kind of player he could be.
Ossai’s 2019 Stats
- Led UT with 90 tackles
- 5 sacks
- Started every game
The Longhorn linebacker had nine tackles, six of them for a loss and three sacks in the Alamo Bowl win over Utah. Ossai was named the defensive MVP of that game.
“Obviously I would like to replicate the Alamo Bowl and even top it sometimes,” Ossai says.
Throughout his two years at Texas, Ossai has flashed incredible potential but it hasn’t always resulted in consistent play. In 2019 he led UT with 90 tackles and five sacks while starting every game. Those are solid numbers, but most believe he can take that next step to becoming a star on defense. Ossai could benefit from the coaching changes made this off-season. With Chris Ash taking over as defensive coordinator, it’s likely Ossai will play more on the defensive line and be asked to rush the passer more this season.
“I want to use my strengths, my length and my ability to help the team as much as I can,” Ossai says.
If Texas can tap into his true potential, Ossai could have a big junior year and launch himself into being a real NFL prospect. ESPN has him ranked as the fifth best outside linebacker in the country. It’s a nice recognition but not something he cares about right now.
“It tells me nothing, I know it sounds whatever but I don’t care,” Ossai says.
He is focused on getting UT back to a championship level and the rest of the attention will take care of itself.
“I want to win a national championship. I’ve never won a championship,” says Ossai. “I understand what comes with a national championship is a great performance from the defense and offense. “
While the dreams are there for next season, the work towards that is happening right now while the team is separated. Ossai has stayed in Austin most of the time since school got shut down and goes to workout a lot at Sam Ehlinger’s house with a couple of other teammates. He’s hopeful the whole team can be back together soon, but knows safety is most important at the moment.
“It’s selfish of me to say I want football back as soon as possible,” Ossai says. “I’d rather people’s safety come first because there are people dealing with terrible things, loss of family and loss of close ones.”
