STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Sticking to a healthy diet can be easy with a helping hand. That’s where Suzanne Schechtman steps in with her fresh-pressed, raw juices, smoothies and salubrious sandwiches at Annadale’s Pure Juicery.
Suzanne and husband Bryan subscribe to this kind of eating regimen. Menu items like Avocado Mash Toast and Turkey Avocado wraps with arugula and red onion fit right into their own diet repertoires. In fact, since the business started in August, Suzanne confesses that the couple is really enjoying their own creations. So much so, the fruit and veggie-focused diet has made them lose quite a bit of weight.
The small business started with fresh juice and pressed nut milk “subscriptions,” monthly programs for home delivery. The couple manufactured them at a family-owned USDA facility in Brooklyn and shipped regionally with the product packed in dry ice. Now those recipes are produced fresh daily on Staten Island in the brick-and-mortar operation.
The juices have a shelf life of three to five days; there are no additives or preservatives. Several varieties come with monikers such as “14K” -- carrot, apple, lemon, ginger -- and “Dr. Celery” -- celery softened by pear and lemon juices.
Other menu offerings include salads built on grilled chicken and assorted produce -- Caesar, a gingery combo with cucumber, carrot and Romaine plus a House version of greens, cucumbers, olives and red peppers. Gourmet toasts can be smoothed with almond butter, hummus, fig jam or basil pesto, topped with sweet fruit or savory cheeses.
Bowls also are a great focus of Pure Juicery, composed from acai, nut butters, Nutella, kale, dragon berry, fruits, veggies, hemp seeds, granola and coconut flakes.
Pure Juicery is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and has a few tables outside for sipping its specialty teas, herbal lemonades and cold brewed coffees. It is located at 895 Annadale Road, a familiar address, perhaps, because of its predecessor Sweet Sweet Sue’s cupcake boutique, now in Tottenville.
Suzanne smiled and said, “I always had my eyes on this place because my name is Sue.” And the building is right around the corner from the Schechtman’s home.
Originally from Kansas City, the proprietor is an alum of Columbia University. An avid swimmer, the athletic background and work in food packaging helped shape her nutritional interests. Hubby’s work in the industry started as a USDA inspector. Tottenville High School grad Bryan now supervises a USDA manufacturing plant in Brooklyn. The experience managing daily USDA quality checks has translated well to the Pure Juicery operation where the couple bottles and labels their own product.
“The food safety and regulation background is what led us to start the business,” said Bryan.
Pure Juicery delivers via UberEat, GrubHub and DoorDash. The business can be reached at 718-500-4922 or via PureJuiceryDrink.com.
