The La Salle-Peru High School Board will change it’s original hybrid in-person and remote learning schedule.
The plan originally required the composite COVID-19 positivity rate to remain below the 8% threshold for 14 consecutive days.
After much discussion among board members and hearing comments from faculty and students in attendance, the administration will instead require a 14-rolling average instead of consecutive.
With this amendment the rest of the proposed hybrid in-person and remote learning schedule will move forward as originally presented. The schedule of class five days a week, from 7:45 a.m. to 12:06 p.m. began Monday, Oct. 26.
Instead of one day of the percentage being above 8% setting the countdown to in-person learning back at one; the administration will now use a weekly report that La Salle County completes on Fridays to determine the communities positivity rate.
If the county reports two consecutive weeks (Friday to Friday) of positivity below 8% in all ZIP codes within the school district; the school will then transition to hybrid in-person learning.
This meeting was called after multiple board members didn’t realize in the original plan the countdown to in-person learning would reset after just one day above the 8% threshold.
This decision didn’t come without it’s skeptics as a teacher representative from the school spoke about concerns from the faculty.
Some of the teachers' concerns included getting the necessary amount of time to transition, the safety of faculty and children involved and making sure the board continues to use science as a guiding principle.
Some LPHS students spoke in favor of returning to school stating other schools ability to return and the quality of online learning as reasons to move towards the return to school.
While the guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health and the CDC can be useful tools, all parties acknowledged they are not perfect and are dependent on a multitude of variables.
The meeting ended with the approved amendment to the 14-day metric by unanimous board decision.
