After originally committing to Minnesota in February of 2017, former 247Sports Composite four-star recruit Jalen Mayfield re-opened his recruitment after receiving an offer from Michigan. The No. 16 ranked offensive tackle in the class of 2018 then committed to the Wolverines and has played there ever since.
The redshirt sophomore started all 13 games at right tackle for the Wolverines last year and was an honorable mention All-Big Ten honoree. Back in August of this year, Mayfield announced that this would be his last season at Michigan and that he will be entering the 2021 NFL Draft.
Keeping up with a recent trend on Twitter, Mayfield shared his “how it started vs. how’s it going” post by comparing his original recruitment to Minnesota compared to his time at Michigan.

Prior to the season starting, Mayfield had originally opted out due to COVID-19 in order to prepare for the upcoming draft. Once the Big Ten announced its return to play, Mayfield opted back in for the 2020 season.
Appearing on the Inside Michigan Football program before the season, Harbaugh confirmed that Mayfield has returned to the field and has been cleared to play by the NCAA.
“He did submit a waiver to be able to come back and play,” Harbaugh said. “That waiver has been granted. I think that there were a few stipulations that he had to do, but that waiver has been granted that he can (return to action).”
