Superintendent says rules are subject to change
MORLEY — After one day of wearing face masks throughout the day, Morley Stanwood Elementary School students returned to school Tuesday with no masks, following instructions from the Morley Stanwood Community School's original return-to-learn plan.
Superintendent Roger Cole said this is because of the Michigan Supreme Court ruling Friday, which took emergency powers from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
While not sure what this would do for current executive orders the governor had already put into place, the school district proceeded with plans to enforce masks for elementary-aged students.
"Because of the decision from the Supreme Court came Friday, there was no time to digest it," Cole said.
However, Cole said the district made the decision to retract the mask order after additional guidance from the state suggesting schools stick with their original return-to-learn plans.
In the district's plan, Cole said elementary-aged students were not required to wear masks if they were in their designated classrooms.
"We opted for that given it made more sense for that age group," he said.
However, with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recently announced they would be reinstating executive orders originally enforced through Whitmer's emergency powers, Cole said it is unclear at the moment whether or not elementary students will have to revert to wearing masks again.
For the time being however, he said the school district will be using its original return-to-school plan that has been in place since the start of the school year.
"Right now, we're going to stick with our plan," he said, noting he did not want to confuse parents or students by asking students to wear masks again. "If we immediately shift sails because the wind changes, we'll cause confusion."
Other schools in the Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District also sent similar notices to parents, saying they would be sticking with their plans for the time being.
At Big Rapids Public Schools, Superintendent Tim Haist said in a school-wide notice the district would be maintaining its current policies for students as well, but also noted these are subject to change.
"We anticipate we will receive more guidance from our local health department in the next day or so," he said. "Our goal will be to coordinate with them about any next steps and any possible amendments to the plan."
