Libby Geist, vice president and executive producer of ESPN Films and original content, is exiting the company at the end of this year after more than a decade, Realscreen has confirmed.
The news comes a week after ESPN confirmed that Connor Schell, co-creator of the acclaimed ’30 for 30′ series and the company’s EVP of content, would be stepping down in January to form his own independent production outfit.
Both departures follow layoffs at the Disney-owned sports mediaco. Earlier this month, news broke that ESPN would be laying off 300 employees and eliminating another 200 positions globally.
In her current role, Geist (pictured) oversees development, production, distribution, branding and strategy of all projects under the ESPN Films umbrella, as well as original series and studio shows on ESPN+, the company’s direct-to-consumer streaming service.
Projects under Geist include the ’30 for 30′ strand, Detail with Kobe Bryant and ’30 for 30′ Podcasts. Geist, a three-time Peabody Award winner, also served as executive producer on Michael Jordan docuseries The Last Dance.
She also spearheaded ’30 for 30′ spin-offs including the ‘Nine for IX’ series – nine documentaries about women in sports, by female filmmakers.
The executive also oversaw development, production and strategy for O.J.: Made in America, the 2017 Oscar winner for best documentary feature.
Prior to joining ESPN, Geist’s first production job was at Shoot the Moon Productions under director Dan Klores, where she worked from 2003 to 2008. She worked on four documentaries there, including Crazy Love, which won an Independent Spirit Award, and Black Magic, a four-hour, two-part documentary which won her a Peabody and an introduction to ESPN Films, where she started in 2008.
