Humans have increasingly contributed to global warming over the past century by releasing climate-changing carbon emissions as we fuel our modern lives. The U.N. climate science panel has said that man-made carbon emissions need to reach “net zero” by 2050 in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Many governments have tried to adopt policies to lower our emissions, but their attempts have fallen short of the scale and impact needed.
According to Climate Neutral, a non-profit working to decrease carbon emissions, “the solutions exist. We just need to fund them.”
Pure Project, a craft brewery in San Diego that is always up to cool sustainability stuff, partnered with Climate Neutral to offset their entire carbon footprint for the year through verified carbon credits, which fund projects that reduce emissions around the world. Such projects include:
- methane capturing at a Massachusetts landfill,
- the protection and conservation of nearly 500,000 acres of tropical rainforests in Brazil, and
- improved forestry management in over 175,000 acres of mixed native hardwood forest in Minnesota.
Born in early 2019, the Climate Neutral Certification is gaining traction amongst environmentally conscious companies across all types of industries. Last year, there were a total of 146 Climate Neutral Certified Brands; together they measured and offset more than 200,000 of carbon.
While these companies are on the forefront of a movement to fund the climate change solutions needed to reach a world with zero net carbon emissions, Pure Project did not stop there. They went above and beyond the requirements for carbon neutrality and offset all the carbon for their employees’ individual lives as well, making them a Carbon Regenerative business.
“While they do not have a ‘Climate Regenerative’ logo for us yet, we felt it was the right thing to do,” says Pure Project Co-founder Mat Robar. “We want to do more than just get back to zero; we want to be a part of the solution and leave this place better than we found it.”
