There’s a new Italian spot in town owned by San Francisco’s 83-year-old institution, Original Joe’s.
On Tuesday Little Original Joe’s opened in San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood. The takeout-only concept also includes a marketplace featuring Italian goods. It’s the third restaurant for siblings John and Elena Duggan, who are the third-generation family owners of Original Joe’s.
“Considering the many challenges this year has presented, we could not be more excited to officially open the doors to Little Original Joe’s, a restaurant we’ve been dreaming about for many years and our first step toward evolving the Original Joe’s brand,” John shared in a statement.
Little Original Joe’s features comfort food like sandwiches, salads and popular pasta dishes from the Original Joe’s menu. There’s also an interesting local spin to the menu. If the pizza tastes familiar, it’s because it is prepared with the same dough recipe used by Sal Alioto, the former owner of the nearly 30-year-old Paradise Pizza.
Little Joe’s is located at 393 West Portal Ave., the previous home to Paradise Pizza that closed in 2018. When the space became available last year, John and Elena secured the location to open their new concept, The San Francisco Chronicle reports. The siblings shared that they frequently visited Paradise Pizza when they were growing up in the neighborhood, so featuring Alioto’s pizza style is one way to pay homage to his longstanding business and to the community at large.
“Beyond anything, Original Joe’s celebrates heritage and honoring your roots,” Elena said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sal, learn his beloved dough recipe, and incorporate it into this new era for the Original Joe’s family. Our hope is to bring a sense of comfort and familiarity to the West Portal community.”
Beyond the pizza, the marketplace at Little Original Joe’s offers a selection of fresh and frozen pasta, Italian and California wines, plus cured meats and other items to stock your pantry.
Little Original Joe’s is located at 393 West Portal Ave. in San Francisco. The marketplace is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and its restaurant open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
