The Covid-19 pandemic may have closed down Broadway theaters, but fans have still been able to see their favorite performances online, as many shows have been adapted for the screen and released on streaming services. This summer, Hamilton made its way to Disney Plus, and a new musical about Princess Diana will premiere on Netflix this winter before it debuts on Broadway next spring.

The Prom is the latest hit Broadway musical to get a film adaptation. Directed by Ryan Murphy and adapted by two of the writers of the original production, Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin, the film was released in theaters on December 4 and then hit Netflix on December 11.

Set in Indiana, the musical (which debuted in 2018) follows four down-on-their-luck Broadway actors who—after learning that a lesbian student was banned from bringing her girlfriend to her high school prom—rush to her aid in an attempt to boost their own flailing careers. The film adaptation has serious star power, with Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, and Andrew Rannells playing major roles. Here, take a look at the cast of the Netflix film versus the original Broadway production, and the characters they play.

1 Dee Dee Allen (played by Meryl Streep and Beth Leavel)

In the original production, Broadway veteran and Tony winner Beth Leavel played Dee Dee Allen. The character is a theater legend who is receiving bad reviews for her role in a show about Eleanor Roosevelt. In the film version, powerhouse Meryl Streep takes on the part.

2 Barry Glickman (played by James Corden and Brooks Ashmanskas)

Longtime Broadway star Brooks Ashmanskas played the character of Barry Glickman in the original Prom. The Glickman character stars opposite Dee Dee Allen in the Eleanor Roosevelt show, and his career is equally on the decline. The two scheme to drum up positive press by taking up a charitable cause, and after scouring Twitter, find that there is the high school student being targeted for her sexuality. Bingo—they decide to swoop in and help. The film version enlists comedy star James Corden to play the role.

3 Emma Nolan (played by Jo Ellen Pellman and Caitlin Kinnunen)

Emma Nolan is the high school student character who is banned from bringing her girlfriend to prom. In the original show, she is played by Caitlin Kinnunen (who has also appeared in Broadway productions of Spring Awakening and The Bridges of Madison County). The Netflix adaptation stars newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman.

4 Alyssa Greene (played by Ariana DeBose and Isabelle McCalla)

Alyssa Greene is the girlfriend of Emma Nolan—and happens to be the daughter of the PTA president, who banned them from going to prom together. The Broadway production cast Isabelle McCalla (who played Jasmine in the Broadway production of Aladdin) in the role, and in the Netflix film, she is played by Ariana DeBose, known for her work in Hamilton. (She will also star in Steven Spielberg's upcoming West Side Story.)

5 Angie Dickinson (played by Nicole Kidman and Angie Schworer)

Angie Dickinson is a fellow Broadway actor who teams up with Dee Dee and Barry to protest the school's treatment of Emma and Alyssa. Angie Schworer played the character on Broadway, and Nicole Kidman takes up the role in the film—musical numbers and all.

6 Mr. Hawkins (played by Keegan-Michael Key and Michael Genet)

Mr. Hawkins is the high school principal who, though supportive of Emma and Alyssa, is largely powerless against the aggressive PTA. In the original 2018 Broadway production, the character was played by Michael Potts, who was replaced by Michael Genet in 2019 (pictured right). Keegan Michael Key stars in the film.

7 Mrs. Greene (played by Kerry Washington and Courtenay Collins)

Mrs. Greene is the head of the PTA and mother to Alyssa. She is reluctant to accept her daughter for who she is, but over the course of the show, comes around. Courtenay Collins played the character on Broadway, and Kerry Washington takes her turn in the film version.

8 Trent Oliver (played by Andrew Rannells and Christopher Sieber)

Trent Oliver is the fourth Broadway has-been who joins Dee Dee, Barry, and Angie in their quest to improve their public image by helping Emma fight the school. Christopher Sieber originated the role on Broadway, while Andrew Rannells (Hairspray, The Book of Mormon) will star in the film.
