The original Broadway production of Grease opened February 14, 1972, at the Eden Theatre with Barry Bostwick starring as Danny Zuko opposite Carole Demas as Sandy Dumbrowski. The production received seven Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical, and went on to play 3,388 performances, a record at the time. Notable replacements during the show's eight-year run included Peter Gallagher, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Judy Kaye, and Richard Gere.

Grease tells the story of Danny and Sandy who fall for each other during a carefree summer fling. But when the school year begins, Danny is torn between his feelings for good-girl Sandy and his image with the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies. Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the musical has cemented itself in theatre history with classics such as "You're the One That I Want," "Summer Nights," and more.

Grease returned to Broadway in a 1994 revival starring Ricky Paull Goldin and Susan Wood and again in a 2007 revival with Max Crumm and Laura Osnes.

In 2016, the show was also broadcast as a live musical event on Fox as Grease: Live, a three-hour telecast co-directed by Alex Rudzinski and Thomas Kail, starring Julianne Hough as Sandy, Aaron Tveit as Danny Zuko, Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, Keke Palmer as Marty, Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchie, and more.
