Kong’s axe in Godzilla vs. Kong shows that the MonsterVerse is repeating a mistake from the two pop culture icons’ original fight. In 1962, Toho released King Kong vs. Godzilla, which saw the two creatures engage in an epic showdown in Japan. The outcome of their battle is still being contested today.
King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) ended with both monsters falling into the ocean, but only King Kong was shown emerging from the water. This left the impression on audiences that Kong was the winner. However, since the movie didn’t take a strong stance on this, the ending was hotly debated by fans, with many feeling that Godzilla simply remained underwater. The controversy persisted, even when Toho gave the victory to Kong in a synopsis.
One of the issues that fans had with the film was how Kong won, which was through his electrical powers. In the movie, Kong was powered up by a bolt of lightning that allowed him to rise from the ashes of defeat and fight back against Godzilla. The energy he received from the lightning also enabled him to emit bursts of electricity from his fingertips. It was because of this power that Kong was able to turn the tide of battle. If it wasn’t for that, he likely would have stayed down and the conflict would have been over. As for Godzilla vs. Kong, it’s become apparent that the MonsterVerse equivalent of King Kong’s electrical powers from their original fight is the axe.
Kong’s axe, a weapon that was made from a Titan bone and one of Godzilla’s back spikes, is somehow capable of catching Godzilla’s atomic breath. It may possess other powerful abilities as well, given the fact that it glows in the trailer. Either way, it’s clear that the weapon is much more than just a giant melee weapon. What this means for Godzilla vs. Kong is that it’s moving in the same direction that Toho went with King Kong in the 1962 film. Rather than let the two monsters fight as they are, both movies have had to make big, sudden changes to Kong. And neither King Kong vs. Godzilla or Godzilla vs. Kong has stopped at just giving Kong a size upgrade.
As fun as it may be to see the King of Skull Island wield a giant axe with Godzilla’s powers, it’s not really a traditional element of Kong’s character. It would be more interesting to see who would win between them without any new factors altering the outcome. The fact that Kong had to rely on a brand-new power to win hurt the original movie’s ending, and Godzilla vs. Kong is now making a similar mistake. Hopefully though, the film will find a way to take the axe out of the equation for the final minutes of the fight at the very least. A shot in the trailer of Godzilla and Kong facing off with the axe on the ground suggests that this indeed may be the course the MonsterVerse movie will take.
