The Electric-type has been an interesting one in competitive Pokemon. Offensively, most Electric-type Pokemon are known to be strong attackers -- especially on the special side. But they are only super-effective vs. two types and are completely walled by Ground-types. Defensively, it only has one weakness -- the aforementioned Ground-type -- but there hasn't been a case yet of any Electric-type Pokemon notably specializing in that side of battling.
Regardless, a lot of Pokemon with the Electric-type paired with another suitable type have proven to be assets in the current metagame. But what about pure Electric-types who have no other type to their name? Quite frankly, not all of them pan out as well as one would want. However, a few have grown to be quite valuable given the specific capabilities they have.
10 Pincurchin (Low Tier)
This electric urchin from the Galar region is, to say the least, interesting from a battling standpoint. Among the other mediocre Electric-type Pokemon that failed to make the cut, Pincurchin at least has a weird niche going for it aside from being a subpar offensive threat.
Said niche is that it's the only other Pokemon with Electric Surge as an ability -- the other being Tapu Koko, one of the most viable Electric-types in Generation VIII. Though it doesn't have awesome stats or moves to take advantage of it, it can at least make waves in lower tiers as a terrain setter.
9 Eelektross (Low Tier)
Accounting for abilities and the like, Eelektross has no weaknesses, due to the solitary Ground-type weakness being cancelled out by Levitate. That should make it incredibly viable as a wall to any type of damage. So it would seem, but Eelektross doesn't have anything spectacular to back up its supposed defensive potential.
It works fine as a pivot, but it can only take so many hits with its poor defensive stats. It's got good offensive stats, but lacks the Speed to use it reliably and its learnset is run-of-the-mill for the most part. Perhaps it's a small buff away from true viability, but it spends its time in lower tiers for now.
8 Ampharos (Generation II vs. Mega Evolution)
This Electric-type was introduced in Generation II and spent most of its early days as a fairly serviceable special attacker and paralyzer. Most early movesets applied its Static ability in tandem with special Electric-type attacks and, surprisingly, Focus Punch.
Above all else, though, Ampharos is the first of two Pokemon on this list to have gained significant viability in the competitive scene from a Mega Evolution. While, of course, it isn't a pure Electric-type at this stage, it proved to be an excellent tank that could take hits and hit back much harder. It hasn't appeared in Generation VIII yet, but it's probably safe to assume that it can't hang its hat on that anymore.
7 Manectric (Low - Mid Tier)
For many of Ampharos' qualities in terms of competitive viability, ditto Manectric. Prior to gaining its Mega Evolution, it was a pretty standard special sweeper. It had great Special Attack and Speed, as well as rare access to great Fire-type coverage like Flamethrower. Those abilities would increase tenfold upon Mega Evolving, giving it an extra boost to both stats while also giving it the Intimidate ability.
Unlike Ampharos, Manectric is available to use in Pokemon Sword and Shield, but it's unfortunately not been given enough run to be considered viable without its Mega. There are just too many Pokemon that could play its role better for Manectric to have a chance.
6 Electivire (Low - Mid Tier)
For a brief while, Electivire had some shine as a solid, capable sweeper. However, much like the previous entries on this list, Electivire's lost that shine due to other, more viable options knocking it a few rungs down the competitive ladder.
The best way to use it is to switch into an incoming Electric-type move and gain a Speed boost from its ability, Motor Drive. That turns its Speed from decent to rivaling some of the fastest Pokemon of its tier. Where it suffers is its lackluster movepool; it has a lot of options for solid moves, but they all come with a certain fallback. Its best STAB moves are special despite it being a better physical attacker.
5 Jolteon (Low - Mid Tier)
There's always been a debate on which Eeveelution is the best. Jolteon certainly has a strong case as it's been in the game for quite a while and has consistently been very viable to some extent. While its best days are certainly behind it, it's still a force to be reckoned with.
Most of that viability comes from its blazing 130 Speed that makes it useful as either a special sweeper, an Electric-type pivot with Volt Absorb, a Substitute-user, or a utility Pokemon that can do a little bit of everything. On the contrary, it lacks the bulk most of the other Eeveelutions have and its pool of coverage moves are OK at best.
4 Xurkitree (Mid Tier)
Having the highest Special Attack out of any Pokemon ever will get you places. This wiry Ultra Beast has flaunted that stat to become a dangerous, straightforward endgame sweeper with its wide array of STAB and coverage moves. Of course, the constant Special Attack jumps from Beast Boost make it even more dangerous with every body that drops.
When not put in the right situation, though, Xurkitree's frailties can show; both its Defensive stats find themselves at a measly 71. It also doesn't have the most spectacular Speed, so it could use the help of a Choice Scarf. Even so, one well-placed priority move could do unexpected damage.
3 Raikou (Mid - High Tier)
All the way since Generation II, Raikou has been an enduring presence in competitive Pokemon battling. Even though it plays that fast special attacker role that most Electric-types play, it has had the stats and movepool to play that role better than most.
Speaking of the former, it's got decent bulk at 100 Special Defense and 90 HP alongside its great 115 in both Special Attack and Speed that has given it potential as an excellent pivot. Speaking of the latter, it's got an excellent set-up move in Calm Mind that works great in tandem with its wide array of set-up and coverage moves.
2 Zeraora (High Tier)
Another fast attacker, this Generation VII Mythical Pokemon has a stupendous 143 Speed, surpassing the likes of Dragapult and even the banned Spectrier. What makes Zeraora stand out is that it has that wrinkle of being a physical attacker rather than a special one.
One could certainly make it a special attacker if they wanted, but its slightly superior physical Attack and better pool of physical moves. This includes tons of coverage moves, as well as its powerful signature move, Plasma Fists. These certainly make it out to be better on that end. Like Jolteon, it also carries the Volt Absorb ability, making it an incredible offensive pivot.
1 Regieleki (High Tier)
Zeraora's incredibly fast, but there are still a few select Pokemon that can outspeed it. For instance, there's the Legendary introduced in The Crown Tundra that's, in theory, guaranteed to outspeed everything: Regieleki.
The fastest Pokemon in the game at 200 base Speed has a myriad of uses in the competitive scene today. Its most popular use is as a lead for setting dual screens and exploding. But it could surely be used as a standard Special Attacker -- especially with its Transistor ability that boosts Electric-type moves beyond the regular STAB. It's frailer than a stray wire, but all these aforementioned qualities make it easy to work around that.
