Dillian Whyte rematch with Alexander Povetkin moved to Gibraltar in late March

Dillian Whyte's eagerly-anticipated rematch with Alexander Povetkin for the World Boxing Council Interim heavyweight title has been switched from the UK to Gibraltar and scheduled for Saturday March 27, three weeks later than originally planned at Wembley Arena, London. Travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic brought about the changes, with promoter Eddie Hearn on Saturday night labelling the bout 'The Rumble On The Rock'. Brixton fighter Whyte will be attempting to avenge his shock fifth- round knockout defeat to Russian former world title challenger Povetkin in August 2020 on the grounds of Matchroom Sport. Whyte exercised the immediate rematch clause with the contest first scheduled for November but it was delayed when Povetkin tested positive for coronavirus. A new target date was set for January 30 this year, before the national COVID-19 lockdown saw it postponed again. Hearn said: "In the current environment we are always having to think on our feet. We did everything to try and make March 6 happen, but with the new travel restrictions it was impossible. Now we have something outside the box, compelling, and a unique setting for one of the Heavyweight Fights of the Year - roll on the Rumble on the Rock." Elsewhere on Saturday night, Hearn's event at the SSE Arena, Wembley, saw rising welterweight prospect Josh Kelly beaten by European welterweight champion David Avanesyan, stopped in the sixth round. It represented a serious step up in class for the former Rio 2016 Olympian taking on the experienced - and dangerous - Russian Armenian in the headline event, and although cut in the second round by his opponent's hooking punches, Kelly's style - elusive and counter-punching - worked smartly in the early rounds against the heavy-handed, power-punching 32 year old who had already fought at world level in his professional 12-year sojourn. But the power of the champion eventually told, Kelly's performance against Avanesyan providing a clear marker of where the Sunderland fighter needs to improve after four years in the paid ranks after his first defeat. Kelly is not ready to climb towards world level. It was Adam Booth, who was the man in the corner for notably, among others, David Haye and George Groves, who threw in the towel. He will now have to rebuild the strategy for the 26-year-old. In the co-main event, undefeated welterweights Florian Marku, of Albania, a former mixed martial artist, and kick boxer, stopped Rylan Charlton, from Norwich, in the ninth round, after a classy performance displaying terrific hand speed and footwork. It was Charlton's first defeat in his eighth fight.
