Fans of the original Nier will have more than just the original game to run through, as it's been confirmed that NieR: Replicant ver. 1.22474487139… will include cut content planned for the original game. The original Nier released over a decade ago on the PS3 and Xbox 360. While some criticized its combat, the game’s somber, engrossing story and intriguing world-building amassed a cult following in the years leading up to the release of its sequel, NieR: Automata. Because of that game's surprise success in the West, NieR: Replicant changing the original to recapture made Automata a critical and commercial hit.

A significant difference for Western fans looking to pick up Replicant is that the main character is different from the original game. When Nier released in Japan as Nier Replicant, the protagonist was much younger than the version outside Japan. In the Western release, known only as Nier, the protagonist was older. The relation between himself and supporting character Yonah also changed from brother-and-sister to father-and-daughter. This and other differences mean that the remastered version that will release this April is the Japanese version, making it the first time that version will release in the US.

In a PCGamesN interview, producer Yosuke Saito confirmed that the remaster's graphical upgrades, content cut from the original game is making its way to NieR: Replicant ver. 1.22474487139..., such as more story sections and a new boss fight for players to find. Other new content in includes more links between the original game and NieR: Automata and “something” for fans of “Papa Nier,” the Western version’s fan-given nickname of the protagonist. Saito also said that the game’s combat was overseen by PlatinumGames’ Takahisa Taura, who helped design the combat of NieR: Automata, bringing it more in line with the sequel.

NieR as a series has intrigued and confused players due to the nature of its story. Because of its origins from the Drakengard series - another set of games by director Yoko Taro - and unique combat, many passed up the original game. However, NieR Replicant seems to be aiming to reinvigorate the original's content, better connect itself to the sequel, and modernize itself at the same time, and it looks as though it may pay off.

Hopefully, new players will enjoy what fans of the series already have much more quickly with the new content added to NieR Replicant. However, if the game is as successful as NieR: Automata, Square Enix would be remiss not to also consider remastering (if not fully remaking) Drakengard to bring the story completely together on modern systems.
