DEFENDING CHAMPION: England’s Bronte Law finally gets the chance to defend her maiden LPGA Tour title this week after the tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19 in 2020. Law fired back-to-back 67s in the final two rounds here in 2019 to claim a two shot win over Madelene Sagstrom, Brooke Henderson and Nasa Hataoka.
COURSE: The River Course at the Kingsmill Resort near Williamsburg, Virginia welcomes the LPGA Tour once again, as players attempt to add their name to an illustrious winners at the venue from both the PGA and LPGA Tour.
Originally designed by Pete Dye, who returned nearly 30 years later to update the course, the River layout is part of the facilities 63 golf holes and will measure 6,445 yards this week and play to a par of 71.
The course lies on the banks of the James River, with water in play significantly on the closing three hole stretch where the winner is often decided.
PRIZEMONEY: US$1,300,000.
PLAYERS TO WATCH …
Brooke Henderson makes her first start since her win at the LA Open in late April having skipped the Asian Swing in favour of some rest at home, and will surely be a factor this week.
The Canadian is obviously in good form having already won on Tour this year and returns to a venue where she has improved each year but as yet failed to get over the line.
Henderson has finished inside the top-20 each of the last three years and was runner-up here to Law in 2019 and will no doubt be looking to go one better this year.
The best players in the women’s game have consistently won this event since its inception in 2003 and the 23-year-old is certainly now in that class and would not look out of place as a winner at Kingsmill.

Another player making her first start fresh off a win is two-time winner of this event Ariya Jutanugarn.
The Thai superstar won at home earlier this month and will be glad for the week off following to prepare herself to challenge for another title after rightfully celebrating what was a significant moment in her career.
Ariya was the winner here in 2018 and 2016, so the River Course clearly suits her eye and having recently ended her win drought is obviously keen to keep her momentum going, making a late entry with sister Moriya to play this event.
Good ball strikers play well at Kingsmill and Ariya is elite in that category.
72-HOLE RECORD: American Lexi Thompson set the tournament scoring record in 2017 when she reached 20-under-par (264) and beat runner-up In Gee Chun by five shots.
PAST AUSSIE WINNERS: Minjee Lee (2015) and Karrie Webb (2006).
