‘Fortnite’ Season 7 Reminds Us That The Original Map Was Way Better - Forbes

mixdes.blogspot.com

I had high hopes for Season 7 of Fortnite and it turns out I should have kept my expectations in check. Fortnite’s newest season is a mixed bag at best, and a major disappointment at worst.

I lay out my thoughts on the new season—and why I prefer the original map—in my latest YouTube video:

What do I like? The end of Primal weapons and the crappy crafting mechanics from Season 6. You can still craft—side-grading weapons with nuts and bolts—but it’s a minor part of the game compared to last season.

The addition of alien tech—IO weapons like Rail Guns and Pulse Rifles—is also pretty great. These weapons are a lot more fun than the Primal weapons of Season 6, more in line with some of the Stark Industries weapons we had earlier this Chapter.

I also really like the Kymera skin which you can customize by tracking down Alien Artifacts each week. Sure it’s a bit grindy....

...but you can make a super unique Kymera very quickly with just a couple weeks worth of Alien Artifacts collected (see my character in the above video).

What I don’t like about Season 7:

  • The NPC system is still in place, meaning challenges are given out by NPCs in the game menu area and this gets messy and hard to navigate quickly. This has been the way Epic has handed out weekly challenges for several seasons now and it’s just not great.
  • Team Rumble has seen some changes from Season 6 but none really fix what’s wrong with the mode. Matches are still too empty and uneven and last too long and fizzle out awkwardly. Partly it’s that the Chapter 2 map isn’t as conducive to this mode and is just, well, not as good in general (something I discuss at length in the video at the top of this post).
  • We still need other big team modes rather than just Team Rumble all the time. Where is Food Fight? Disco Domination? 50v50?

The Battle Pass is okay this season but nothing really jumps out at me as particularly great other than the creative Kymera skin. Rick from Rick and Morty is fun but just kind of feels like another licensed skin thrown in at random rather than with any kind of thought or creativity (think Deadpool back in the Spy vs Spy season and how much effort clearly went into that on Epic’s part). And some of the skins are just super subpar, as I pointed out in my recent spray-can guide where I include a picture of Season X’s Tilted Teknique skin versus this season’s Sunny skin.

I’m just unimpressed, I guess. This is another mediocre season in the making and I really do think a lot of that has to do with the map and the menus and just a lackluster effort all around. I miss the Chapter 1 map because it was a lot more fun to explore, had better hot spots and more varied terrain. This season’s “Aftermath” central location is about as boring as they come and we have nothing like Tilted Towers or even Stark Industries to really qualify as a hot drop.

What do you think of Season 7 so far? Of the Chapter 2 map vs Chapter 1’s OG map? Let me know in the comments to my YouTube video or on social media.
