FLINT, MI -- Flint’s first Poet Laureate Semaj Brown paused between words, power in the silence as she read her original poem “Where Am I From?”
Brown passionately recited the words at the Flint Institute of Arts theater of a piece she wrote in fall 2020.
The poem was created as part of a project that focused on the intersection of environmental injustice or ecological problems and racial and social problems, organized by Kent State University in collaboration with Columbia University and EarthEthics.org.
Brown’s piece is based off a poem of the same name crafted by writer and teacher George Ella Lyon.
“In the poem, I’m talking about all these racial problems intersecting with environmental problems with the earth and the survival of the earth,” Brown explained to MLive-The Flint Journal.
Listen and watch the video above for a front-row seat of Brown reciting the poem.
