Peacock will be streaming even more Olympic content outside of the games. The NBCUniversal streamer has announced that they will be featuring a range of content including daily live shows, full-event replays, dedicated Olympics channels and curated highlights.
All of the content will be available for free streaming with the exception of USA Men’s Basketball which will be available for Peacock Premium subscribers.
While the Olympics have come with controversy due to health concerns, the games are planned to start on July 23 in Tokyo.
The streamer has announced several original shows that will stream on Tokyo NOW daily. They also have announced five additional channels: Great Moments, Meet the Olympians, Must-See Moments, Team USA and Tokyo Flame, an all-hours Livestream of the Olympic flame.
Many of the original shows are traditional sports talk and commentary. These include a morning show called Tokyo LIVE with Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbajabiamila, Tokyo Gold - a highlight and interview show with Rich Eisen and a new nightly show Tokyo Tonight with Cari Champion and Kenny Mayne.
Other announced shows take a more out-of-the-box approach. Amber Ruffin of Peacock’s late-night series The Amber Ruffin Show, will be doing shows from Tokyo and providing comedic analyses and a look back at her own experiences in sports. Similarly, Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg takes a humorous approach to sports commentary as the two riff on impressive athletics and athletic blunders.
The streamer also announced the original show On Her Turf at the Olympics. The show, hosted by Lindsay Czarniak, Lolo Jones and MJ Acosta-Ruiz, will be dedicated to covering women’s sports and will feature a host of female Olympic athletes.
Other announced programing include For Ball and Country - a look at the USA Men’s Basketball Team, Golden - a series that follows gymnasts Laurie Hernandez, Morgan Hurd, Sunisa Lee, Konnor McClain and MyKayla Skinner, and The Sisters of ‘96: The 1996 USA Women’s Olympic Soccer Team.
While the amount of content is impressive, having shows that feature women and comedy may bring casual and even less-than-casual sports viewers to the streamer. With so much of the content available for free, the streamer has also set itself up to the hub for those looking for Olympic content.
