A phrase you’ll often hear associated with Costa Rica is “Pura Vida” or “Pure Life,” and for good reason—with its endless vegetation, smooth sand, and world-renowned surf, there’s not much reason to touch it. “As we are witnessing a collective shift towards more meaningful travel and conscious consumption,” says the cofounder and CEO of hospitality group Habitas, Oliver Ripley, “Santa Teresa is a destination that has captured the hearts and imaginations of a growing number of people that are looking for a different experience.” As such, Santa Teresa has become the latest destination that Habitas has set its sights on (in addition to its Alula, Bacalar, Bhutan, and Todos Santos outposts) for a 2022 opening.
Designed to blend with the surrounding beachfront jungle environment, the open structure of Habitas Santa Teresa shows an understanding of the land and deference to nature as its guide. “Our low impact construction methodology maintains the original flora and builds around the large Ceiba trees found on property,” says Ripley. Even more, the palapa rooms are made using local, organic materials, granting guests a sense of full immersion into nature. Built low impact to leave a minimal trace on the environment, the resort’s ocean-front beach club and restaurant deepen this connection to nature.
Aside from the guest rooms, the main focal points of the property are the surf center, wellness space, restaurant, pool, and beach club. “Our property is located on one of the best surf breaks of Santa Teresa, and surfing will be a core part of our experience with instructors ready to take you out for a morning or afternoon surf session.” Otherwise, guests are encouraged to explore the pool or beach club, enjoy health-conscious bites, and relax at the wellness space—which offers holistic therapies such as sound meditation, massages, and more—surrounded by the jungle.
The hope is that guests depart with “a deeper sense of awareness, consciousness and empathy towards our planet” than when they arrived. And with this being Santa Teresa, after all, “we hope many guests will take the opportunity to learn how to surf and fall in love with the sport.”
