EACS will stick with original 'mask optional' plan for new school year - Fort Wayne's NBC

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - Leaders with East Allen County Schools announced they will stick with their original plan of having masks as optional for the upcoming school year.

EACS officials made the announcement at their "board of statement" meeting, which followed the executive session meeting Monday night.

Dozens of people gathered for the meeting to voice their thoughts, however, the meeting did not allow for public comment.

EACS board of trustees president Todd Buckmaster said masks will be optional for the upcoming school year at the beginning of the meeting. The announcement comes after district leaders passed a resolution that made masks optional for the fall last May.

Buckmaster acknowledged the recent rise in COVID-19 cases, and said the district's decision is fluid and could change in the future if the numbers continue to increase. He said the district's goal is to keep students safe and in the classroom. He added the plan allows parents the opportunity to decide what's best for their kids.

"We take the safety of all of our students very seriously," said Buckmaster. "These types of decisions are very hard to make because there are always two sides of the coin, and there are people who are passionate on both sides. Just know that we have spent hour upon hour upon hour coming up with a plan that we think that's good for the kids, and we can work with, and even adjust if we need to down the road."

Returning to the Classroom: How Teachers Are Feeling Today

The announcement comes during a time when many school districts across the state are deciding whether to require masks or not for the new academic year.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended in July that all students in kindergarten through 12th grade should wear masks when they return to classrooms for the new school year, regardless of their vaccination status.

CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky urged all schools reopen to in-person learning in the fall, but with proper safety protocols — and that now includes masks.

"CDC recommends that everyone in K-12 schools wear a mask indoors, including teachers, staff, students and visitors regardless of vaccination status," she told reporters.
