AKRON, Ohio – R. Shea Brewing Co. plans to officially launch its Moscow Mule True Original Hard Seltzer in September.
The idea for the seltzer predates Covid by a few months, co-owner Ron Shea said.
“It took a lot of iterations,” Shea said. “A lot of seltzers are sweet. We didn’t want to follow the generic seltzer market. We wanted to lessen that sweetness and run with a specific kind of mule product.”
Shea tested it at both of his taprooms – Canal Place and in the Merriman Valley - garnering feedback for six months before the initial canning run. Now he’s ready to go with mostly self-distribution for the rest of 2021.
“Lower calorie,” he said. “It doesn’t make you feel full like a Double New England IPA.” He added market research shows it’s what people are drinking at pools and similar places, he said.
The big names in the national hard-seltzer market are White Claw, which has enjoyed huge growth, along with Truly. The latter is owned by Boston Beer Co. All Fizzed Up, a fest focusing on hard seltzers, is scheduled for September in Cleveland.
As its name implies, Shea’s seltzer is based on the famous Moscow Mule cocktail and is billed as having ginger and lime flavors. It is 4.5% alcohol with less than 1 gram of carbohydrates and 95 calories per 12 ounces.
Origins are sketchy of the Moscow Mule – a concoction that includes vodka, ginger beer and lime juice – but the drink is believed to date to the early 1940s.
Shea has done a nice job expanding his brewery while keeping tabs on the industry and remaining open to styles. He and Mark Milakovich of Moscow Copper Co. own Hard Mule Seltzer Co. The seltzer is on tap and in 12-ounce cans at R. Shea Brewing and is available via RivalryBrews.com.
