CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Minh Anh, one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in Cleveland, will close in October.
“I’ve been here (over) 35 years,” said owner Camla Wadsworth, who plans to retire. “It’s too much for me now.”
Minh Anh, located at 5428 Detroit Ave. in the Gordon Square Arts District, opened in 1984 at a time when you’d be hard-pressed to find a spot serving bowls of pho with beef balls or vermicelli rice noodles topped with spring rolls. But even as Vietnamese restaurants have sprouted up across the region, Minh Anh has remained popular with diners, drawn there not just by the food but the restaurant’s old-school, working-class charm, too.
“While we are incredibly sad for ourselves that Minh Anh is closing, we are happy that Camla is able to retire and close Minh Anh on her own terms,” said Adam Stalder, Executive Director of Northwest Neighborhoods, the community development corporation that oversees that area. “Losing a beloved business is never easy, but we wish Camla, her family, and her staff all the best.”
In 2002, Joe Crea, the late food critic for The Plain Dealer, called Minh Anh “consistently one of the best restaurants of any kind in Cleveland, period.” More recently, the restaurant appeared three times in cleveland.com’s “50 Things to Eat and Drink in Greater Cleveland” lists, a feature that ran from 2014-2019 where chefs, foodies and celebrities named their favorite local dishes. The grilled pork vermicelli bowl received the honor in 2017, followed by the cinnamon rare beef with rice noodles pho and vegetarian Vietnamese stir fry in 2018. The kitchen also serves Chinese and Thai cuisine.
“Officially my favorite Viet restaurant in all of CLE,” a reviewer on Yelp wrote. “There aren’t enough words to describe how happy their food makes me,” raved another.
The restaurant hasn’t announced an exact closing date yet, but the owner expects it to be closer towards the end of October. Until then, Minh Anh is open for lunch and dinner Tuesdays through Sundays.
