2021 is finally over and here are the best Disney+ original movies and TV shows that have been released on the streaming service. Since its launch in November 2019, Disney has continuously churned out original movies and series including award-winning Star Wars and MCU projects. These series have drawn in massive audiences with Disney reporting over 118 million subscribers as of November 2021. Disney+ released over 30 TV shows and movies in 2021 alone, including animated series, feature-length films, and documentary series.

This content 2021 content boom is due in large part to the extensive delays which plagued productions in 2020 as a result of Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions. This is why The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was released in March 2021, nearly eight months after its initially scheduled release in August of 2020. This shake-up changed Disney+’s entire 2021 slate and spoiled audiences with a continuous intake of Marvel-related content. In fact, the service’s final MCU series of 2021, Hawkeye, just concluded on December 22nd and offered audiences their best look yet at Vincent D’Onofrio’s return as Kingpin.

The final series premiering in 2021 is The Book of Boba Fett which debuts on December 29th. This series was previously teased in The Mandalorian season 2 which featured Temuera Morrison reclaiming the armor of Boba Fett. However, because six of seven The Book of Boba Fett episodes will release in 2022 the series will not be featured in this article. Nevertheless, with so much original programming coming out in 2021, it would have been easy to overlook one or more of the following TV shows or movies. 10. Big Shot

Big Shot is a sports comedy-drama starring John Stamos as a disgraced NCAA basketball coach forced to coach a high school girls’ basketball team. This series debuted on April 16, 2021 and ran for 10 episodes with a second season confirmed to be in the works. Big Shot sits with a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and deserves a spot on any Disney+ best original content list because of the heart brought to the series by John Stamos, Jessalyn Gilsig, and the terrific supporting cast of teenage basketball players.

Like all great sports films and TV shows, Big Shot achieves the perfect balance between relationships and athletics. Consequently, John Stamos delivers a touching performance as a man struggling with pride, family, and legacy. Furthermore, Big Shot features relatable characters and their very real high school struggles. These struggles make the series a great coming-of-age TV show as it offers something for the whole family. Fans of the series will be able to look forward to Big Shot season 2 at a to be determined time.

9. Luca

Luca was originally intended to be a theatrically released Disney-Pixar production, however, due to Covid-19, the film was rebranded as a Disney+ original film and released exclusively on the streaming platform on June 18, 2021. The film stars the talented Jacob Tremblay (Luca) and Jack Dylan Grazer (Alberto) in the titular roles and features an outstanding supporting cast including Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan, and Sacha Baron Cohen. Pixar’s newest animated movie, Luca, is a feel-good coming-of-age adventure that recounts the tale of two best friend sea monsters living it up in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera while trying to keep their secret safe.

Luca and Alberto’s relatable journey of self-discovery produces a compelling story and offers plenty of humor for children and adults alike. Additionally, the charming film showcases Pixar’s beautiful animation and ability to deliver a nostalgic look back on treasured summer holidays. Though some might compare Luca to The Little Mermaid, Luca manages to weave a genuine and heart-warming story about summer friendship and the struggles of growing up. While Luca 2 has yet to be officially confirmed, director Enrico Casarosa feels optimistic.

8. What If...?

Marvel-What-If-Guardian-Multiverse-Featured

What If…? is the first MCU-affiliated animated project and showed audiences what would have happened if pivotal Marvel moments would have gone differently. The 9-episode season began on August 11th, just weeks after the season finale of Loki created infinitely branching timelines. Audiences were guided through these vast realities by The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) who appeared in every episode of the series. While many MCU actors returned to voice their animated counterparts, several key parts were recast including Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and Natasha Romanoff.

What If…? is an incredibly original series and offered fun twists on MCU mythology while integrating a beautiful animation style that felt perfect for the narrative. The episodes all featured epic action sequences and nuanced character relationships that captured the true essence of the MCU’s live-action films. Consequently, What If…? is a seamless continuation of the MCU in animated form and its animation alone earns it a spot as one of the best Disney+ original TV shows.

7. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was meant to kick off Phase 4 of the MCU but was significantly delayed due to Covid-19. Therefore, it became Disney+’s second MCU series and debuted on March 19th. While not as unique or genre-pushing as WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier worked as a continuation of Sam and Bucky’s story from the Captain America trilogy. Running for a total of 6 episodes, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showcased the relationship between Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) as they struggled to work together to defeat the Flag Smashers.

While the series is full of solid performances including Stan’s struggle to find redemption, the most compelling element of the series is Mackie’s ascension to claim Captain America’s mantle. This journey is both thrilling and poignant as Sam struggles with identity and what it means for a black man to carry the shield. Consequently, this engaging and highly relatable story represents an important addition to the MCU which came at a vital time. Though there will likely not be a season 2, Anthony Mackie is confirmed to appear in Captain America 4.

6. The Mighty Ducks: The Game Changers

The Mighty Ducks: The Game Changers is a sequel to the 1990s The Mighty Ducks trilogy starring Emilio Estevez (Gordon Bombay) and Joshua Jackson (Charlie). While Joshua Jackson does not return for the series, Emilio Estevez reprises his role as Coach Bombay and is joined by several other returning cast members in guest roles. This Disney+ original series features a fun spin on the original films with the Mighty Ducks now being a highly esteemed and selective team. Consequently, when Evan Morrow (Brady Noon) is cut from the team, his mom encourages him to form his own team which recruits Bombay as their coach.

While The Game Changers does recycle the plot from the originals, the nostalgic Disney+ series embraces the world of the franchise and delivers solid performances from a new generation of charismatic players. Furthermore, the classic take on the underdog sports story provides more than enough heart and determination to serve as an inspiration for anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider or been the last player chosen on a team. With The Mighty Ducks: The Game Changers season 2 officially on its way, it’s well worth a watch, and its 30-minute episodes make it a quick binge.

5. Star Wars: The Bad Batch

Star Wars: The Bad Batch works as both a sequel and spin-off of Star Wars: The Clone Wars which officially ended on Disney+ in 2020. This spin-off created by Dave Filoni focuses on the squad known as Clone Force 99. Specifically, it explores this unique squad of genetically varied clones as they struggle to discover their new purpose in the aftermath of the Clone War. From a narrative perspective, The Bad Batch does a great job finding its place as a self-contained TV show while acknowledging the larger world established in The Clone Wars.

Audiences have raved about The Bad Batch’s superior animation and ability to adeptly craft uniquely relatable characters. Moreover, the show shares a similar pace with The Clone Wars as it takes its time to explore these clone outcasts struggling with the moral reality of being a clone post-Order 66. Overall, the series is a great addition to Star Wars canon and helps fill in the gaps of Star Wars lore. With a season 2 confirmed for Disney+, The Bad Batch will be a great addition to any Star Wars fan’s watchlist.

4. Hawkeye

Hawkeye is the final Disney+ original MCU series of 2021 and presents audiences their best look at Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton. After having been largely overlooked in previous MCU films, Renner finally receives his moment in the spotlight and does not disappoint. Hawkeye introduces Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to Clint Barton and the MCU and follows the pair as they battle the Tracksuit mafia during Christmas in New York City. The series brings all the holiday cheer of your favorite Christmas movie and combines it with everything audiences love about the MCU.

With an excellent balance of humor, heart and adventure Hawkeye accomplishes everything it needs to as a Marvel series. Moreover, the series brings together characters from across the MCU including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) whose appearance in the series was teased in Black Widow’s post-credits scene. However, it’s Hawkeye’s ability to balance conflict, personal grudges, and friendship that lands it so high on a list of Disney+’s best 2021 original movies and TV shows. The series set in motion so many stories that all culminate in a brilliant action-packed season finale.

3. Loki

Despite only having 6 episodes, Loki may be the most important Disney+ original series as it was the first MCU project to fully dive into the multiverse. Loki follows a Loki variant after he escapes New York with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame and his subsequent discovery of the TVA (Time Variance Authority) and the TVA’s protection of the “Sacred Timeline.” With an infinite number of timelines constantly needing “pruned” Loki investigates who oversees the timeline and challenges the TVA’s role in deciding the universe’s fate.

Loki is filled with incredible performances by Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Owen Wilson (Mobius), and Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie) as well as a unique narrative full of twists and turns. Consequently, this originality and fresh take on Loki’s journey make the project stand out from other MCU projects. Furthermore, the series shouldered the unique task of taking Loki’s character from the end of The Avengers (2012) and making him the character audiences had grown to love over the course of the MCU. Though the MCU has sometimes struggled with its villains, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki will always shine as the god of mischief.

2. The Beatles: Get Back

The Beatles: Get Back is the latest documentary project from critically acclaimed director Peter Jackson. Jackson’s last directorial project was the ground-breaking documentary They Shall Not Grow Old which utilized full-restored WWI footage. Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back is a three-part documentary series utilizing similarly restored footage that dropped on Disney+ on November 25, 2021. It currently boasts impressive scores on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% on the Tomatometer and a 93% Audience Score. Jackson compiled the 3 episodes from nearly 60 hours of previously unseen footage and over 150 hours of unheard audio from a 21-day recording session in 1969.

Director Peter Jackson was the first person in almost 50 years to be given access to this treasure trove of forgotten Beatles content and is the first to deliver The Beatles’ final rooftop performance in its entirety to audiences. Jackson’s compelling documentary series provides a never-before-seen look at The Beatles’ creative process and their ability to perform under seemingly impossible deadlines. Moreover, Jackson crafts an incredibly intimate look at the fab four and how their beautiful friendship allowed them to create one iconic song after another. The Beatles: Get Back is a must-watch for any music fan.

1. WandaVision

WandaVision was the surprise success of Marvel’s 2021 Disney+ original series and continues to hold its place as the best of Disney+’s Marvel TV shows. Debuting on January 15, WandaVision captivated audiences as a love letter to American sitcoms. Picking up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the series kicked off Phase 4 of the MCU. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprised their roles as Scarlet Witch and Vision and showcased Wanda’s struggle with the loss of Vision over the course of its 9 episodes.

This incredibly unique series brilliantly explored classic sitcom tropes and presented Wanda’s dream of living the “perfect life” with Vision and their family. This intimate look at Wanda’s relationship with Vision and subsequent desire for a family proved equally humorous and heartbreaking. Additionally, it proved to be an integral part of the MCU’s Phase 4 as it teased the multiverse and Wanda’s mission to find her twins. WandaVision is an outstanding example of the MCU at its best with the perfect blend of humor, action, and heart. From exceptional performances to outstanding visuals, WandaVision set a high standard for future Disney+ original series.

With countless streaming services and a continuous stream of new programming, it would be easy to miss the best of the best, especially on Disney+. From the MCU to a galaxy far far away to wholly original programming, Disney+ delivered a slate of top-tier programming in 2021. It definitely sets a high bar for itself moving forward. 2022 is set to give audiences multiple new Marvel series and films, Hocus Pocus 2, and a brand-new Star Wars television show. While these may be the best 2021 Disney+ original TV shows and movies, there is still plenty of content to check out.
