Naruto's Original Fourth Hokage Was The Most Unlikely Shinobi Ever - Screen Rant

mixdes.blogspot.com

The revelation that Naruto's father had been the Fourth Hokage was certainly a twist, but the title was originally held by a far more unlikely contender. While there are all kinds of Shinobi in the series, the idea that a ninja dog could have been the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village seems preposterous. Yet according to Masashi Kishimoto, this was exactly what he first envisioned.

In an interview translated by user KirinNOTKarin98, posted on Narutopedia, Kishimoto mentions he initially planned to have a ninja dog, or 'ninken', as the Fourth Hokage. His editor dismissed the idea, however, saying that he was "thinking off on a tangent again". With the ninken Hokage idea shot down, Kishimoto decided to make Minato the Fourth Hokage instead, and the rest is history. But the editor might've made the wrong suggestion.

Ninken may not be consistently common in Naruto, but when they do appear, they steal the spotlight. They're devoted companions and just as capable in battle as their masters. One clan is known for being particularly intertwined with their canine friends, exemplified by Kiba Inuzuka and his four-legged partner, Akamaru. These ninja dogs have such power and personality that it really makes perfect sense that one would be considered for the position of a past Hokage. Exploring more of Kishimoto's work gives readers a hint at what the world could've looked like if he'd stuck to his original plan.

Naruto is a culmination of ideas and concepts Kishimoto has experimented with in the past. The young hero's love of ramen lingers from his initial origin as a chef's apprentice, and he was a shape-shifting fox in his pilot chapter before being changed into the vessel for the Nine-Tails. Similarly, the ninken could be a callback to Kishimoto's Karakuri. The one-shot follows a specialized security enforcer and his talking surveillance pet. Karakuri offers a peak at what Naruto could have been like. And with the one-shot having won at least one award, Kishimoto could be inspired to create an alternate-universe one-shot about the ninken Hokage in the future.

Kishimoto's editors have pulled a lot of strings behind the scenes to make Naruto what it is today. It's come a long way from its initial concept, with only a handful of easter eggs and interviews to remember it. The story may have benefited from these changes, but other details would have been fun to leave in if Kishimoto had been given the chance. The concept of a ninken in a position of authority has worked for him once before and could've been just as successful a second time around. Unfortunately, the idea of Naruto's fourth Hokage being a ninja dog will have to live on in readers' hearts.
