BATAVIA — Batavia’s Original Pizzeria owner Kathy Ferrara said the restaurant will hopefully open next week after five employees reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.
“It’s just a staffing issue and we should be open on Monday,” she said Thursday night. The restaurant was closed Thursday and will be closed through Sunday, Ferrara said.
Ferrara did say a server contracted COVID-19 from a family member.
“To the best of my knowledge, we have five out with positive tests,” she said. “I’m not completely sure where they contracted it. The health department will do contact tracing. I do know that no one, as of yet, has contracted it at the pizzeria.
“It’s not mandatory that we’re being shut down. It’s my call alone, just for the safety of the staff and customers,” the Batavia’s Original owner said.
The server and other employees are being quarantined, she said.
On the Batavia’s Original Facebook page, the restaurant replied to one post by saying it thought it had contacted everyone who had made reservations and apologized to one person about not being in contact. Asked what else she wanted to tell the public Thursday, she said, “Thank you for your patience and we should be back open on Monday.”
“We hope they would have understanding that we were trying to keep everyone safe,” Ferrara told The Daily News. “My staff knows what is required — masks at all times, frequent hand washing and disinfecting high-touch surfaces on the hour, every hour.”
