Though Demon's Souls may not seem like the type of game to include a morality system, there is a semblance of one in the form of the World Tendency feature. Despite being instrumental to getting certain items, completing various questlines, and even adjusting the difficulty of the game, there's almost no explanation of what World Tendency is or how it works.
In the simplest of terms, as players take certain actions in Demon's Souls, their World Tendency will shift towards white or black. Actions that are typically considered "good" will shift the World Tendency towards white, while "evil" or "bad" actions will have the adverse effect of shifting it towards black.
World Tendency is separate for each Archstone, and in each world there are certain events that will only happen if the player's World Tendency is pure white or pure black. Beyond this, the color of their world will also affect the game's difficulty and the quality of rewards. In the case of Pure White World Tendency, enemies will be easier to defeat and the player will be stronger, but they'll also earn less souls for their efforts.
The main way to achieve Pure White World Tendency (often abbreviated as PWWT) is to defeat any of Demon's Souls' difficult bosses. In most areas, each boss the player defeats will increase their World Tendency by 45%, meaning beating all three will result in achieving pure white. The trick is that players need to make sure not to shift towards black at all during this endeavor, which means no killing NPCs. Beyond this, it's also important to stay in Soul form as much as possible, as dying in Body Form will shift World Tendency towards black by 30%.
If players have already died in Body Form several times and are finding their World Tendency stuck in black, there are a few other ways to increase it and get back to white. Notably, if the player's world is black enough, powerful enemies called Primeval Demons will spawn that will drastically increase World Tendency. Beyond this, the only repeatable option in every level to increase World Tendency is to defeat invading players, but this is risky as dying will mean losing World Tendency.
For those lucky enough to have friends that also own a PS5 and play Demon's Souls, invading each other repeatedly is a good way to increase World Tendency. Otherwise, players should just progress in Soul Form until they've reached Pure White, complete all PWWT events in that area, and then work their way down to Pure Black World Tendency.
Demon's Souls is available now on PS5.
