Anime history just got a little bit easier to find. All episodes of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime start streaming on Crunchyroll today.
Set sometime in the distant future, Mobile Suit Gundam follows the story of a galactic war fought between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. The two warring factions face off from the decks of massive space ships, planets full of civilians, and most importantly, giant piloted mechs called Gundams.
Originally aired in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam helped popularize the mecha genre. The series often deals with themes like the effects of war on soldiers, and the toll that war can take on the civilizations that fight them, but if that’s not quite your speed, there are also hundreds of huge space battles between robots the size of buildings.
Since its original release, the Gundam series has come to includes dozens of spinoff series, movies, games, manga, theme parks, and restaurants. Many of these spinoffs, including Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, are already available to stream on Crunchyroll — though the service is missing other entries in the series like Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket.
All 43 episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam will be available to stream starting at 6 p.m. ET on Monday for Crunchyroll subscribers.
