Why Godzilla & Kong's Fight Will Be Nothing Like The Original - Screen Rant

Kong’s two biggest advantages against Godzilla in their original fight won’t be factors in Godzilla vs. Kong, which is why comparisons aren’t fair anymore. It’s become clear at this point that how their first fight played out shouldn’t be used to predict what happens in their MonsterVerse rematch.

Over 50 years ago, the King of the Monsters and the King of Skull Island came to blows for the first time in Toho’s 1962 crossover film, King Kong vs. Godzilla. In the movie, the two titular monsters had three encounters, two of which being heated showdowns. Godzilla won the first decisively, but struggled in the second. Due to getting a burst of energy from a lightning bolt, Kong came back into the fight fully invigorated. With the help of his newfound electrical powers, Kong pushed Godzilla to his limit, and together, the two fell into the ocean. When only Kong emerged, it was perceived by many that Kong was the winner. This idea was later reinforced by a movie synopsis released by Toho.

What transpired during their battle is something that fans often look to when discussing their upcoming encounter, but the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer shows why comparisons between the two fights don’t really work. First of all, Kong had two major disadvantages in the original fight: his body shape and his lack of an answer for Godzilla’s atomic breath. Toho’s take on Kong was bulky and slow, whereas the MonsterVerse’s Kong has a great deal agility that feels appropriate for an ape. His mobility will help him dodge attacks and outmaneuver Godzilla in ways that his Toho counterpart never could in the 1962 movie.

Godzilla vs Kong Axe Atomic Breath Fight Trailer

Then there’s the matter of Kong's axe. Not only will it be a great weapon against Godzilla, but it’s also the perfect defense for his opponent’s atomic breath. The trailer proves that Kong is capable of blocking it with the axe blade (which is actually one of Godzilla’s dorsal plates). It was no secret that the MonsterVerse’s Kong would be much more agile this time around, but the atomic breath was one advantage from the first film that Godzilla was expected to keep for the new movie. However, it appears that this too won’t be that big of an issue.

A third element of the original fight that won’t be present in Godzilla vs. Kong is the plot device that served as a turning point for King Kong. So far, there’s been no indication in the MonsterVerse that their version of the monster can be powered up by lightning, nor can he emit electricity form his fingertips. If it wasn’t for this power, Godzilla would have beaten Kong. Replacing the electrical powers is the axe, which will challenge Godzilla in a totally different way. He never had to worry about Kong swinging a weapon that could cut into his hide in the original film, but it will certainly be a concern for him in the rematch. All things considered, Godzilla vs. Kong promises to deliver a fight that’s quite unlike what came before it.
